💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU citizens do not have automatic work rights. They need a valid work permit, Gold Card, APRC open work permit, student work permit or other legal basis.

Non-EU Citizens

Most foreigners require employer sponsorship and a work permit before legal employment. Salary, degree, experience and job category rules apply.

EU Blue Card

Taiwan does not use the EU Blue Card. The closest high-skill route is the Taiwan Employment Gold Card, a combined work permit, resident visa, ARC and re-entry permit for qualified professionals.

Freelancer Visa

Freelancers often use the Gold Card, entrepreneur visa, APRC open work permit or company setup route. Ordinary visitor status is not a legal basis for local work.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours Often 40 hours/week officially, but overtime culture varies strongly by sector. Semiconductor, hardware and finance can be demanding; startups and multinationals vary.

Annual leave Labour Standards Act annual leave starts at 3 days after 6 months and rises with tenure; many professional employers offer more.

Sick leave Ordinary sick leave can be up to 30 days/year with partial pay under labour rules; employer policy and medical certificates matter.

Trial period Probation is commonly written into contracts, often 3 months, but dismissal still must comply with labour law.

Notice period Notice depends on tenure under labour law, commonly 10-30 days for employer termination after probation/short tenure thresholds.

Salary range Basic minimum wage 2026: NT$29,500/month (NT$196/hour, effective January 1, 2026 — 10th consecutive annual increase). 2026 professional ranges: English teaching NT$60k-90k/month, software NT$900k-2.2M/year, semiconductor engineering NT$1.0M-3.0M/year, finance/management NT$1.2M+.

Pay frequency Monthly salary is standard; annual bonuses and Lunar New Year bonuses are common but contractual details matter.

CV format: Use a clear reverse-chronological CV. Chinese-language CVs can include more personal details than Western CVs, but multinational applications should avoid unnecessary age/photo/nationality unless requested.

Cover letter: Expected

Language: English is enough for some multinational, tech and teaching roles, but Mandarin greatly expands options and daily workplace integration.
