🏛️ Social Contributions
Mandatory universal health insurance covering outpatient, inpatient, dental, Chinese medicine and prescriptions. Low copays (NT$50–420 per visit). 2026 general premium rate: 5.17% (unchanged since 2021).
Covers work injury, ordinary sickness (70% of insured salary from day 4), maternity (60-day lump sum), disability, old-age pension (15+ insurance years), and death. Foreign employees with valid work permit must be enrolled from day 1.
Defined-contribution individual account held at BLI, portable across employers. Foreign ARC holders working under Labour Standards Act are covered. Account earns minimum 2.479% (2026 2-year fixed deposit benchmark). Withdrawable from age 60.
Covers unemployment benefit (60% of insured salary × up to 6 months), parental leave allowance (60% × up to 6 months per parent), and vocational training living allowance. Foreign workers enrolled in Labour Insurance are eligible for parental leave allowance.
🛒 VAT Rates
Taiwan Business Tax is commonly referred to as VAT/GUI tax; standard rate remains 5% for most taxable goods and services.

🌍 Special Expat Tax Rules
Foreign special professionals may qualify for preferential taxation on 50% of income above NT$3,000,000 for qualifying years if conditions are met. Employment Gold Card holders should review this carefully with a CPA.
📋 Double Tax Treaties
Taiwan has tax agreements with many jurisdictions, though treaty coverage is more limited than large OECD countries. Check whether your home jurisdiction has an agreement and whether relief is available.
