FreeAccessing Therapy
Through public insurance: Psychiatry visits and medication are accessible through NHI clinics/hospitals. Psychotherapy coverage is more limited and often hospital-based or private.
Waiting times: Psychiatry appointments can be quick in clinics; English-speaking psychotherapy may require weeks or months.
- - Use private bilingual therapists while keeping NHI psychiatrist for medication.
- - Ask international schools, chambers and expat groups for vetted referrals.
- - Consider online therapy with home-country licensed therapist if legally appropriate.
- - Use EAP benefits through multinational employers.
Online Therapy
Insurance covered: No / partially
NHI usually does not reimburse foreign online therapy. Check privacy, licensing and crisis backup.
Expat-Specific Challenges
- -Mandarin fatigue and isolation outside Taipei
- -Workplace hierarchy and indirect communication stress
- -Typhoon/earthquake anxiety
- -Family distance and time-zone strain
- -Dating/friendship culture differences
- -Humidity, crowded housing and noise stress
For immediate danger, call emergency services or go to a hospital ER. Ask a Mandarin-speaking friend, employer HR or building guard for help if in crisis.
