MOHRE — Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation

MOHRE does not operate a public job board for private sector expatriates. It registers employment contracts and mediates labour disputes. For UAE nationals, Nafis (nafis.gov.ae) is the Emirati talent programme connecting nationals with private sector employers. Expatriates cannot register for job placement via MOHRE directly.

💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU citizens have no preferential work rights in the UAE — all expatriates (regardless of nationality) require an employer-sponsored employment residence visa. EU citizenship confers no special advantage in visa processing.

Non-EU Citizens

All non-GCC nationals require an employment residence visa sponsored by a UAE-licensed employer. Process: employment contract signed → MOHRE work permit → medical fitness test → Emirates ID application → residence visa stamping in passport. Total time: 2–4 weeks. Most costs paid by employer.

EU Blue Card

The UAE does not participate in the EU Blue Card scheme. There is no equivalent UAE "Blue Card" for highly skilled workers. The Golden Visa (10-year, self-sponsored) and Green Visa (5-year, self-sponsored) serve a similar purpose for high earners and skilled professionals.

Freelancer Visa

Freelance permits are available through UAE free zones (IFZA, Dubai Media City, Fujairah Creative City, Shuraa). Cost: AED 10,500–20,000/year. Allows freelancing in specific activity sectors. Cannot work for UAE mainland clients without a separate contract arrangement.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours 8–9 hours/day, 5 days/week. Standard hours: 08:00–17:00 or 09:00–18:00. During Ramadan: 6-hour working day. Many offices work 8:00–13:00 on Fridays (some companies have Saturday/Sunday weekends since January 2022). Government sector: some offices close 14:30 on Fridays.

Annual leave 30 calendar days annual leave (after 1 year of service). New joiners: 2 days/month in first year. Public holidays: approximately 11–14 days/year (varies with Islamic lunar calendar).

Sick leave 15 days full pay, 30 days half pay, 30 days unpaid per year (after 3 months service). Medical certificate required from day 1 at an approved DHA/DOH clinic.

Trial period Maximum 6 months under the 2022 Labour Law. Either party can terminate with 14 days notice during probation.

Notice period Minimum 30 days (less than 5 years service), 60 days (5+ years). Contract may specify up to 3 months.

Salary range Wide range: Entry professional: AED 8,000–15,000/month. Mid-level: AED 15,000–30,000/month. Senior/management: AED 30,000–70,000/month. C-suite: AED 70,000–200,000+/month. Tax-free income is the key attraction.

Pay frequency Monthly, via bank transfer through the WPS (Wage Protection System). Must be paid by the 10th of the following month under WPS rules.

CV format: UAE CVs typically include: full name, contact details, nationality, UAE visa status, date of birth (common to include), professional summary, work experience, education, skills, references available on request. 2–3 pages is standard. Cover letter: Expected

Language: English is the primary business language across most UAE professional sectors. Arabic is the official language and is required for some government-interface roles. Bilingual (Arabic/English) candidates command premium salaries. French is useful in some French business sectors; Hindi/Urdu useful in SME market.
