United Arab Emirates (AE)
The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates — Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah — that has transformed from a pearl-diving and fishing economy into one of the world's most modern and cosmopolitan nations within a single generation.
Recycling & Waste in United Arab Emirates
Bin system, bottle deposits, special disposal, and common mistakes.
Recycling in the UAE is less comprehensive than in Northern Europe but has improved significantly in recent years. Dubai and Abu Dhabi have expanded recycling infrastructure as part of national sustainability goals. The UAE Vision 2030 and UAE Net Zero 2050 strategy include significant waste reduction targets. Municipal waste collection is provided by DEWA (Dubai) contracted services, Tadweer (Abu Dhabi), and Bee'ah (Sharjah). Most buildings in Dubai have standard grey bins for general waste — dedicated recycling bins are increasing in community buildings. Separate recycling drop-off points exist across UAE. E-waste and hazardous waste have specific disposal channels.

Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) — EZRecycle — Bottle Deposit System
Dubai Municipality operates EZRecycle Reverse Vending Machines at select locations across Dubai, accepting plastic bottles and aluminium cans. Users receive reward points redeemable via the EZRecycle app. This is a voluntary incentive scheme, not a mandatory deposit system like European bottle deposit schemes.
Points redeemable for discounts at partner retailers. Not a cash return — reward-based system.
Locate EZRecycle machine (app shows locations in malls, supermarkets, metro stations). Insert clean, empty plastic bottles or cans. Receive points on EZRecycle app. Redeem for discounts.
Special Disposal
Enviroserve (Dubai Investment Park), WEEE recycling points at Carrefour, IKEA, Samsung, and Apple stores. Some community centres have e-waste drop-off points. RTA Smart Centres in Dubai accept mobile phones.
Old phones, laptops, TVs, printers, and small appliances. Do not throw in general waste.
Battery collection boxes at IKEA, Carrefour, Lulu Hypermarket, and some community management offices. Also at many electronics retailers.
Both household (AA/AAA) and rechargeable batteries. Never put batteries in general waste due to chemical hazard.
Dedicated cooking oil collection tanks at select supermarkets and municipality collection points. Call Dubai Municipality (800 900) for collection from large quantities.
Never pour cooking oil down the drain — it causes major drainage blockages. Collect in sealed containers and take to drop-off points.
Primark, H&M, and Zara in-store collection bins. UAE-specific: Bag2School collection drives (schools). The Giving Movement and Al Noor charity clothing collection. Lifecycle UAE — professional textile recycling.
Wearable clothing: donate to charity (Al Noor, Hamdan Foundation charity drives). Non-wearable: textile recycling bins.
Dubai Municipality has scheduled hazardous waste collection events. Contact 800 900 for information. Tadweer (Abu Dhabi) — tadweer.ae. Never pour chemicals down drains.
Notify Dubai Municipality or your building management for large item collection. Construction waste: licensed waste management contractors required. Bee'ah in Sharjah operates a comprehensive construction waste service.
Pharmacies across UAE accept unused medication and sharps containers. Never throw syringes or needles in general waste. Return to pharmacy or DHA-approved medical waste disposal.
Bulk Waste
Dubai Municipality (800 900) arranges collection of large/bulky items on request. Free for residential properties. Abu Dhabi: Tadweer bulky waste collection. Most community management offices also coordinate bulk waste removal.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ! Putting food-contaminated packaging in recycling bins — always rinse containers before recycling
- ! Throwing e-waste in general bins — batteries and electronics must go to designated collection points
- ! Placing plastic bags in standard plastic recycling bins — most recycling streams cannot handle thin film plastic. Take bags back to supermarket bag collection points
- ! Disposing of cooking oil in sinks — major infrastructure problem in UAE. Collect and take to designated drop-off
- ! Expecting recycling infrastructure equivalent to Northern Europe — UAE is improving but recycling facilities vary by community
- ! Not flattening cardboard boxes — space-saving is critical; always flatten before recycling
Fines & Enforcement
Dubai Municipality fines for littering: AED 200–500. Illegal dumping of construction waste: AED 500–2,000. Hazardous waste improper disposal: potentially higher fines and criminal liability.
Practical Tips
- → Download the Dubai Municipality app to find your nearest recycling drop-off points
- → Check whether your building/community has dedicated recycling chutes or external bins — varies significantly by building age and management
- → Ramadan generates significantly more food waste — be especially mindful of food disposal during this period
- → Many supermarkets (Lulu, Carrefour, Spinneys) have plastic bag return bins for film plastic recycling
- → Emirates Red Crescent and local charities have regular donation drives for goods in good condition — reducing waste by giving second life
