United Arab Emirates (AE)
The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates — Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah — that has transformed from a pearl-diving and fishing economy into one of the world's most modern and cosmopolitan nations within a single generation.

📊 Income Tax Brackets
| Income from | Income to | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | ∞ | 0% | The UAE levies zero personal income tax on individuals. Salaries, bonuses, investment income, and rental income received by individuals are all tax-free. This applies to all residents regardless of nationality. |
🏛️ Social Contributions
UAE nationals are enrolled in the General Pension and Social Security Authority (GPSSA) scheme. Expatriate employees are NOT enrolled in this scheme and receive no UAE pension benefits. End-of-Service Gratuity (EOSG) applies to expatriates instead.
Not a tax but a statutory entitlement. After 1 full year of service, the employer must pay EOSG upon contract termination (by either party). Calculated on basic salary only (not allowances). If you resign before completing 1 year, no gratuity is owed. Dubai DIFC and Abu Dhabi ADGM free zones operate a Voluntary Savings System (DEWS/GPSSA alternative).
🛒 VAT Rates
Value Added Tax introduced 1 January 2018 at a flat 5% rate. Zero-rated: healthcare, education, exports, international transport. Exempt: residential property, bare land, local passenger transport, financial services. Businesses with taxable supplies over AED 375,000/year must register. Voluntary registration from AED 187,500/year.

🌍 Special Expat Tax Rules
The UAE is one of the world's last remaining zero-personal-income-tax jurisdictions. No tax is levied on employment income, freelance income, rental income, capital gains, or investment income for individuals. However, expats from high-tax home countries (USA, Australia, Germany, UK) may still owe tax to their home country on worldwide income — consult a tax adviser. US citizens must file IRS returns and FBAR regardless of UAE residence.
📋 Double Tax Treaties
The UAE has signed double taxation agreements (DTAs) with 140+ countries including UK, France, Germany, India, Pakistan, China, Singapore, and most Arab states. The UAE-USA DTA is limited — US citizens are still fully taxable in the US regardless of UAE residence due to citizenship-based taxation.
