Uruguay (UY)

Free public early childhood centres for low-income families, funded jointly by INAU, ANEP, and MIDES. Provides developmental stimulation, nutrition, and parenting support. Priority for families below BPS income thresholds.

Apply at local CAIF centre with cédula of parents, child's birth certificate, and vaccination record. INAU social worker assessment for priority places.

Enroll at the nearest ANEP school. No income test — universal access for age 3+. Bring birth certificate and vaccination record (libreta de salud). In-person enrollment at school typically in November–December for the following year.

Contact private schools directly. Most require birth certificate, vaccination record, and a parent interview. Some require prior Spanish or English assessment for older children.

Enroll at local ANEP school (catchment area applies for public schools, but children can apply to any school with space). Documents: cédula or passport, birth certificate (apostilled and translated for foreign nationals), vaccination record (libreta de salud — from Uruguayan health provider). School starts in March, enrollment typically in January–February.

Apply at local liceo (ANEP) for ciclo básico. For bachillerato: select from lyceum or UTU vocational track. UTU specialisations include IT, agronomy, hospitality, and trades. Private secondary schools require direct application and entrance assessment.

Excellent value for residents. UDELAR Extensión Universitaria offers Spanish courses for foreigners at several Montevideo locations. Enroll at extension.udelar.edu.uy.

UTU vocational and language courses available nationally — useful for expats outside Montevideo.

Academia Uruguay (academiacuruguay.com) is a well-known school specialising in teaching Spanish to foreigners with Uruguayan Rioplatense accent focus.
