Vaccinations

Rabies vaccination: valid for 1–3 years depending on vaccine type. Must be administered at least 30 days before travel (for first-time vaccinated animals) or have a valid booster. For dogs: Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza (DHPP/DAP) — current. For cats: Herpesvirus, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia (FHO/FVRCP) — current. Additional vaccinations may be required depending on country of origin — confirm with MGAP at least 8 weeks before travel.

🐕 Dog Tax / Registration

No national dog tax in Uruguay. Some Intendencias (Montevideo IMM) require annual registration of dogs and potentially dangerous breeds. IMM dog registration: nominal fee at IMM offices with veterinary vaccination record. Mandatory Ley 18.471 chip registration for all dogs.

Register your pet with a veterinarian (veterinario clínico) in Montevideo within 30 days of arrival. Bring vaccination records and MGAP import permit. Vet will register the microchip in the Registro Nacional de Animales de Compañía (national pet registry). Annual vaccination updates required by law (Ley 18.471). Uruguay has a strong and growing veterinary sector — clinics in all Montevideo neighbourhoods.

📋 Relocation Process

1. Microchip (ISO 11784/11785) implanted at least 21 days before vaccination (or verify existing microchip matches all documents). 2. Rabies vaccination: valid, administered at least 30 days before travel for first-time animals (30-day activation wait applies). 3. Obtain health certificate from accredited veterinarian in origin country — issued within 10 days of departure. 4. Apply for MGAP import permit at MGAP (mgap.gub.uy/sanidad-animal) at least 4–6 weeks before travel date. Submit: microchip number, vaccination records, origin country vet certificate, and your passport/residency details. 5. On arrival at Aeropuerto de Carrasco: present all documents at the MGAP/DIGESEGA inspection station (before customs). Pets travelling in cargo must be claimed at the cargo terminal and inspected separately. 6. Register pet with local veterinarian and update chip records in Uruguay.

MGAP (Ministerio de Ganadería, Agricultura y Pesca) is the authority for all animal imports. For birds, reptiles, and exotic species: strict CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) permits and additional MGAP authorisations are required — the process is significantly more complex than for cats and dogs and may take 3–6 months. Uruguay has a genuine culture of pet ownership — dogs are widely welcome in public spaces, parks, and some cafés. Leash law applies in public areas. Beaches: some beaches (Pocitos, Ramírez) restrict dogs during summer peak hours. Pound service: IM Montevideo operates the pound (perrera municipal) — chip registration ensures rapid reunion if pet escapes.
