- ✓ Learn some Arabic immediately — even "Marhaba" (hello), "Shukran" (thank you), and "Inshallah" (if God wills) earn enormous goodwill from Jordanians.

Hiking, rock climbing, cycling, football, and swimming are popular. The Jordan Trail (650km national hiking trail) passes through spectacular landscapes. Aqaba and the Red Sea are 4 hours south and offer outstanding diving and snorkelling.

The Jordanian sports and social club scene is built around large private clubs (like the Orthodox Club, Shabab Al-Urdon Club). Membership is typically invitation-based or requires a fee. Jordan is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The Jordan Trail connects Umm Qais in the north to Aqaba in the south (650km). Dana Biosphere Reserve offers world-class hiking and birdwatching. Wadi Mujib (Dead Sea level) has spectacular slot canyons. Ajloun Forest Reserve has marked trails and canopy bridges. Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) manages nature reserves and organises guided tours. The Dead Sea shore and Red Sea (Aqaba) provide water sports year-round.
Public pools are limited. Most expats use pools at private clubs or hotels. Notable hotel pools open for day passes: Dead Sea Resorts (JD 30–60/day pass). In Amman, some private gyms have pools. Aqaba Municipal Beach has public swimming areas.
Volunteering
Jordan hosts approximately 427,000+ registered Syrian refugees through UNHCR as of mid-2026 (numbers declining as Syrians return home following political changes in Syria) and millions of Palestinian-origin residents, creating significant humanitarian needs. Volunteer opportunities range from teaching English to refugees, to environmental conservation, to community development. Many expats volunteer through their international organisation affiliations or through established NGOs.
