Jordan (JO)
Jordan is a stable, welcoming Hashemite Kingdom at the crossroads of the Middle East — home to Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the legendary Wadi Rum desert, and the mineral-rich Dead Sea.
Insurance Guide
Which insurances you actually need in Jordan, prioritised.
Insurance in Jordan is still developing compared to European markets. A few products are truly mandatory (car insurance, worker's compensation). Health insurance for expats is essential given the cost of private healthcare and the lack of universal public coverage for non-nationals. The Insurance Commission (IC) regulates the sector. Major Jordanian insurers include Jordan Insurance Company, Arab Orient Insurance, Al-Nisr Al-Arabi, and Arab Life & Accidents. International providers (AXA, Allianz, BUPA) also operate in Jordan.
Legally Mandatory
- - Third-party motor liability insurance (compulsory for all registered vehicles)
- - Worker's compensation insurance (Ijbari) — mandatory for all employers under Jordanian Labour Law
- - Social Security contributions (SSC) — mandatory for all employees
Comprehensive Health Insurance
Covers doctor visits, hospitalisation, specialist care, diagnostic tests, emergency care, and sometimes dental/optical. Essential for expats not covered by government schemes.
Who needs it: All expats — public healthcare is not reliably available or of international standard for non-nationals.
Annual cost: JD 600–1,500 (individual); JD 1,500–4,000 (family)
Ensure your plan includes emergency evacuation (medevac) and repatriation. Many employer-provided plans have sub-limits — check maternity, dental, and mental health sub-limits carefully.
Third-Party Motor Insurance
Covers damage or injury to third parties caused by your vehicle. Legally mandatory to register and drive a vehicle in Jordan.
Who needs it: Every vehicle owner in Jordan.
Annual cost: JD 60–150 (third-party only)
Third-party only is the legal minimum. Comprehensive motor insurance (Taskin) is strongly recommended, especially in Amman where traffic accidents are common.
Domestic Worker Insurance
Worker's compensation, medical, and life insurance for live-in domestic helpers (housemaids, nannies, drivers).
Who needs it: All employers of live-in domestic workers — legally required under Ministry of Labour rules.
Annual cost: JD 150–400/year
Required to legally sponsor and bring a domestic worker to Jordan. The worker must also have a work permit and Iqama. Violation can result in fines and deportation of the worker.
Comprehensive Motor Insurance
Covers your own vehicle damage in addition to third-party liability. Includes fire, theft, natural disasters.
Who needs it: All car owners — traffic accident rates in Amman are high.
Annual cost: JD 150–500 (depends on vehicle value)
Required by banks if you have a car loan. Check the clause on coverage for driving in the West Bank (if applicable).
Travel Insurance
Medical coverage and trip cancellation/interruption protection when travelling outside Jordan.
Who needs it: All expats travelling outside Jordan. Many Schengen visa applications require it.
Annual cost: JD 50–150 (annual multi-trip policy)
Annual multi-trip policies are excellent value for frequent travellers. Ensure coverage includes pandemic/COVID-related cancellations and check regional restrictions.
Household/Property Insurance
Covers your household contents and/or the property structure against fire, theft, flood, and natural disasters.
Who needs it: Renters with valuable belongings. Property owners.
Annual cost: JD 80–200/year (contents); JD 200–500 (property + contents)
Recommended for Amman expats in areas prone to occasional flash flooding (Abdoun, some lower-lying areas). Contents insurance is good value and covers theft and fire.
Life Insurance
Lump sum or regular income for your beneficiaries on death. Term life insurance is available.
Who needs it: Parents and family breadwinners. Those with mortgages or significant financial obligations.
Annual cost: JD 200–800/year depending on coverage and age
Some employers (especially UN and major NGOs) provide group life insurance as part of the compensation package.
