Denominations
Coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 tenge. Notes: 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 tenge.
Payment Culture
Card payments (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted in Almaty and Astana supermarkets, malls, and restaurants. Outside major cities and in markets, cash (nalichka) is still king. Always carry ₸5,000–20,000 in cash. Contactless payments via Kaspi Pay are extremely popular — Kaspi Bank's super-app dominates daily transactions.
ATM Tips
Halyk Bank, Kaspi Bank, and Forte Bank ATMs are most reliable. Foreign cards usually work but expect ₸500–1,500 fees. Airport exchange booths offer poor rates — use ATMs instead. Kaspi Gold debit card is recommended for residents.
Exchange Tips
Exchange offices (обменники) in shopping malls offer competitive rates. Never exchange money on the street. Wise and Revolut work for incoming transfers but KZT is not always available for outgoing. Local transfers via Kaspi are instant and free.
