- ✓ Learn Dutch, even basics — the Dutch appreciate the effort enormously and it opens up social integration.
- ✓ Embrace cycling — getting a bicycle (fiets) is the single most Dutch thing you can do and integrates you into daily life instantly.
- ✓ Understand "gezelligheid" — the Dutch concept of cosiness and togetherness. Accept invitations to borrel (drinks), cafe evenings, and sports clubs.

Sports (sport) clubs (verenigingen) are the heart of Dutch social life. The Netherlands has approximately 35,000 sports clubs. Football (voetbal), cycling, swimming, tennis, field hockey, and sailing are the most popular. Joining a local club is one of the most effective ways to integrate.

Dutch sports clubs are community-focused. After matches, members gather for socialising at the clubhouse (kantine) — as important as the sport itself. Many clubs offer beginner groups and welcome international members.
