Netherlands (NL)
The Netherlands is a small, densely populated constitutional monarchy in Northwestern Europe, consistently ranked among the world's most liveable and progressive countries.
Scam Warnings
Common scams targeting expats in Netherlands.
The Netherlands has one of the most sophisticated and prevalent online fraud environments in Europe — in 2025 approximately 17% of the Dutch population became victims of online crime. The Netherlands now leads the EEA in digital payment fraud. Three golden rules: never pay a rental deposit before physically viewing a property; treat any Tikkie or iDEAL payment link sent by a stranger as a potential phishing attempt; and check any investment platform against the AFM register (afm.nl) before transferring money. The EU Consumer Rights Directive applies — you have a 14-day withdrawal right for distance and off-premises contracts. SEPA payments apply throughout the Netherlands.
Rental Fraud (Huurdersfraude)
criticalFake rental listings on Funda, Pararius, Kamernet, and Facebook Marketplace are the most common fraud affecting new arrivals. A fraudster posts a property at below-market rent, asks for a deposit or first month's rent before any viewing, and disappears with the money. Extremely common in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Eindhoven, and other high-demand cities where housing scarcity puts renters under extreme time pressure. Identity fraud surged in 2025-2026, with fraudsters also using rental applications to harvest passport scans and BSN numbers.
- - Rental price is significantly below market rate for the area and type.
- - Landlord is 'abroad' or 'too busy' to show the property in person.
- - Pressure to pay a deposit before viewing or signing a contract.
- - Communication only via WhatsApp or email — no phone calls or video calls.
- - Address does not match the photos when checked on Google Street View.
- - Landlord cannot be verified as property owner at kadaster.nl.
Tikkie Payment Link Scams
criticalTikkie is a Dutch mobile payment request app (by ABN AMRO), widely used for splitting costs. Fraudsters abuse Tikkie's branding on platforms like Marktplaats.nl: a 'buyer' contacts a seller, says they want to pay via Tikkie, and sends a link to a fake Tikkie website that redirects to a phishing page mimicking the victim's bank. The victim enters their banking credentials and loses money. Fake Tikkie domains (e.g., mijntikkie.nl) are difficult to distinguish from the real tikkie.me domain. This scam is among the most reported in the Netherlands.
- - A buyer on Marktplaats or Facebook sends a Tikkie link to 'pay' — a legitimate buyer uses Tikkie to request money from you, not to send it to you.
- - The link URL is not tikkie.me — any domain variation (tikkie.nl, mijntikkie.nl, tikkie-betaling.com) is fake.
- - After clicking, you are asked to log in to your bank — Tikkie never asks for your bank login credentials.
- - The amount in the link is €0.01 or a small verification amount — a trick to get your credentials.
- - Buyer insists on Tikkie despite your preference for a different payment method or in-person cash.
Marktplaats Marketplace Fraud
warningMarktplaats.nl is the dominant Dutch classifieds platform and a hotspot for buyer and seller fraud. Patterns include: buyer sends a fake overpayment screenshot and asks for change back; seller receives a fake iDEAL link instead of actual payment; the 'Marktplaats Bezorgservice' scam where criminals send a fake delivery service link to collect personal and payment details; and fake Marktplaats Betaalverzoek (payment request) emails.
- - Buyer offers to pay more than asking price and requests change — no genuine buyer does this.
- - Fake iDEAL payment link sent by the buyer — looks official but leads to a phishing page.
- - 'Marktplaats Bezorgservice' message suggesting a special delivery system with a payment link — this feature does not exist.
- - Seller wants payment via Western Union, crypto, or gift cards.
- - Too-good-to-be-true prices on electronics, bikes, or designer goods.
DigiD Phishing and Identity Fraud
criticalDigiD is the Dutch government digital identity system used for all interactions with tax authorities, benefits, healthcare, and municipalities. Government agencies including DigiD account for 19% of all phishing in the Netherlands. Fraudsters who obtain your DigiD credentials can access your tax portal, benefits accounts, and government services in your name — redirecting benefit payments, filing false tax returns, or changing your registered address. Identity fraud cases involving DigiD credential theft rose sharply in 2025-2026.
- - Unexpected login notification from DigiD that you did not initiate.
- - SMS, email, or WhatsApp claiming your DigiD account will be blocked — click to verify.
- - Link in the message goes to a domain other than digid.nl.
- - Unexpected changes to your tax or benefits account at mijnbelastingdienst.nl.
- - You receive a letter from a government agency about something you did not request or do.
Investment Fraud (Beleggingsfraude)
criticalFake investment platforms promise high returns via cryptocurrency, forex trading, or 'guaranteed' investment schemes. CEO fraud and business email compromise caused an estimated €97 million in damages in the Netherlands in 2025. Scammers often first build trust over weeks or months via social media or dating apps before introducing the 'investment opportunity'. The Dutch Anti-Phishing Shield pilot (launched July 2025) has blocked over 2 million attempts to visit fraudulent financial sites.
- - Unsolicited contact offering investment opportunities via social media, WhatsApp, or dating apps.
- - Guaranteed returns of 10–30% or more.
- - The platform has no AFM (Dutch financial regulator) licence — check afm.nl/registers.
- - Withdrawal of profits is blocked or subject to unexplained taxes or fees.
- - Pressure to recruit others or receive a bonus for referrals.
Phishing — Banks, Belastingdienst, PostNL, and Pakketdiensten
criticalFake messages impersonating ABN AMRO, ING, Rabobank, Belastingdienst (tax authority), DigiD, PostNL, and DPD are the most-reported category of scam in the Netherlands. Messages claim your account is blocked, you have a package waiting with unpaid customs, or you owe a tax payment — prompting you to click a link and enter login credentials. The Netherlands government and ISPs launched the Anti Phishing Shield in 2025, blocking millions of phishing visits.
- - Unexpected message about a package, payment, or urgent account action.
- - Link goes to a slightly modified domain (e.g., belastingdienst-info.nl instead of belastingdienst.nl).
- - Urgent tone: 'act within 24 hours or your account will be closed'.
- - Request for DigiD login, banking credentials, or card details via a link.
- - PostNL or DPD asking for payment for a package you were not expecting.
Fake Employment Contracts and Work Permit Scams
warningTargeting newly arrived internationals: fake recruiters offer contracts that appear legitimate, ask for personal documents (passport, BSN) for 'visa processing', and charge fees for work permits or job placements that do not exist. The Netherlands requires a work permit (TWV) or an EU Blue Card for non-EU nationals — but these are always arranged and paid by the employer, never by the employee.
- - Job offer asks you to pay for a work permit, visa, or background check.
- - Recruiter cannot provide a verifiable KvK (Chamber of Commerce) number.
- - Employment contract references a company that does not appear on kvk.nl.
- - Request to transfer your passport and BSN before any interview or formal job offer.
- - Salary is dramatically above market rate for the described role.
