Netherlands (NL)
The Netherlands is a small, densely populated constitutional monarchy in Northwestern Europe, consistently ranked among the world's most liveable and progressive countries.
Leaving Netherlands
How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
3–6 months ideal lead time. Month 3–4 before: give notice to landlord (minimum 1 month notice runs from 1st of the month, so plan accordingly). Month 2 before: notify employer, utilities (energy, internet, telecoms), health insurer, bank. Month 1 before: deregister at gemeente (or on departure day); cancel subscriptions; set up PostNL mail forwarding. Final week: final meter readings; return keys; final inspection. After departure: stop toeslagen immediately via belastingdienst.nl; file the M-biljet (partial-year tax return) for the year of departure by the deadline. Monitor Dutch bank account for any outstanding payments or refunds (final utility reconciliation, deposit return). Notify SVB and pension funds of new address.
Deregistration
You must deregister from the BRP (Basisregistratie Personen) at your gemeente before or when you leave the Netherlands permanently. Visit the gemeente office (no appointment needed in most municipalities). Your BRP registration will be marked as emigrant. Your BSN remains valid — you will need it for future contact with Dutch authorities (tax, pension, etc.). Non-EU nationals: return your residence permit (verblijfsvergunning) or ID card to the IND or gemeente. For digital notification: some municipalities accept online deregistration via MijnGemeente.
Tax clearance
You are required to file a Dutch income tax return (aangifte inkomstenbelasting) for the year of departure (partial-year M-form for emigrants — M-biljet). File via Mijn Belastingdienst or through a tax advisor. The M-form covers the period of Dutch tax residency. Ensure you declare all Dutch-source income and claim the pro-rata Dutch personal allowances. If you have been receiving toeslagen (zorgtoeslag, huurtoeslag, kinderopvangtoeslag), notify the Belastingdienst of your departure immediately to avoid large repayments. Stop all toeslag advance payments as of your departure date.
Pension portability
Your AOW state pension rights are preserved based on years of Dutch residence — proportional AOW is payable at AOW age regardless of where you live. Get a pension overview at mijnpensioenoverzicht.nl before departing. Notify the SVB (mijnsvb.nl) of your new address abroad for AOW purposes. 2nd pillar (occupational) pension rights: preserved in the pension fund, payable at retirement age. Small pension amounts (below €594.89/year threshold) may be paid out as a lump sum on leaving. EU nationals: EU Regulation 883/2004 coordinates pension rights across EU member states.
Health insurance
Cancel your Dutch health insurance (zorgverzekering) as of your departure date. Notify your insurer in writing with your departure date and proof of deregistration from the BRP. Unused premium for the rest of the month will be refunded pro-rata. If you have zorgtoeslag: stop it via belastingdienst.nl on your departure date. If moving to another EU country: take out health insurance there. Your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) remains valid until its expiry date for temporary stays in EU countries.
Bank account
You may generally keep a Dutch bank account after leaving as a non-resident — useful for receiving pension payments, rental income, or managing Dutch investments. Notify your bank of your change of address and new tax residency. Dutch banks are required to report foreign account holders under the OECD Common Reporting Standard (CRS). If you no longer need the Dutch account, close it formally and request the outstanding balance by SEPA transfer. Neobanks (Bunq, Wise) are easy to maintain from abroad.
Utilities
Notify your energy supplier (gas and electricity) with your departure date and meter readings. Take final meter readings on the day you leave and send photos. Settle the final utility bill after the annual reconciliation. Cancel internet and television contracts — maximum 1-month notice period under Dutch consumer law after the contract minimum period. Forward your postal address via PostNL (postdoorzending) for 1–2 years after departing (€15/month). Cancel all direct debits (automatische incasso) that will not apply after departure.
Rental contract
Give written notice to your landlord with a minimum of 1 calendar month (standard notice period for tenants). Notice can be given any time and runs from the first of the following month. Arrange the final inspection (eindinspectie / oplevering) with the landlord or property manager. Ensure you receive back your deposit (waarborgsom) within 14 days of the end of the tenancy. If there are disputes about the deposit, send a formal objection letter within 14 days and contact the Huurcommissie (huurcommissie.nl) if needed.
