Netherlands (NL)
The Netherlands is a small, densely populated constitutional monarchy in Northwestern Europe, consistently ranked among the world's most liveable and progressive countries.
Insurance Guide
Which insurances you actually need in Netherlands, prioritised.
Dutch insurance culture is pragmatic and well-developed. The regulated health insurance market ensures everyone has basic coverage. Beyond that, home contents insurance and third-party liability (WA) are near-universal. A comprehensive comparison market (independer.nl, pricewise.nl) makes switching easy. Many collective labour agreements (CAO) include employer-paid disability insurance and life insurance.
Legally Mandatory
- - Basic health insurance (basisverzekering) — mandatory for all residents
- - Motor third-party liability insurance (WA) — mandatory for all registered vehicles
Basic health insurance
Statutory basic health coverage covering GP, hospital, medication, and mental health care.
Who needs it: Every person residing in the Netherlands. Legally mandatory.
Annual cost: €1,740–1,980/year (€145–165/month). Zorgtoeslag reduces this for lower incomes.
Compare annually in November at independer.nl or zorgwijzer.nl. You can switch insurer every year from 1 January. Children under 18 are free on parents' policy.
Home contents insurance
Covers personal belongings against fire, theft, water damage, storm, and breakage. Required by most rental contracts.
Who needs it: All renters and homeowners. Most rental contracts require it.
Annual cost: €80–200/year (€7–17/month) depending on contents value
Bundle with personal liability (aansprakelijkheid) for a small additional premium — essential protection for accidentally damaging someone else's property.
Personal liability insurance
Covers you if you accidentally damage someone else's property or cause personal injury (not in traffic). Example: accidentally breaking an expensive item while visiting someone.
Who needs it: All adults. This is a Dutch insurance standard and very inexpensive.
Annual cost: €30–60/year (€2.50–5/month)
Almost universally held in the Netherlands. Without it, a bicycle collision or accidental breakage could result in a large personal liability claim.
Disability income insurance
Income protection for self-employed persons (ZZP) who become unable to work due to illness or disability. Employees are covered via WIA after 2 years; self-employed are not.
Who needs it: Essential for all ZZP/freelancers. Employees are covered by their employer/UWV.
Annual cost: €100–300/month depending on income, deferral period, and coverage level
The Netherlands is reforming ZZP AOV — a sector-based mandatory AOV scheme is being introduced from 2027. Until then, independent ZZP workers must arrange their own. A government ZZP insurance option (module basisflex) is being piloted.
Motor vehicle insurance (WA/All-risk)
WA (third-party liability) is legally mandatory for all vehicles. Beperkt Casco and Allrisk (comprehensive) provide additional own-damage coverage.
Who needs it: All vehicle owners. WA is mandatory by law.
Annual cost: WA only: €150–400/year. Allrisk: €600–1,500/year depending on vehicle, driver age, and no-claims history.
Your Dutch no-claims discount (no-claimkorting / schadevrije jaren) transfers with you if you have a proof of no-claims from your home country insurer.
Supplementary health insurance
Optional coverage for dental care (adults), physiotherapy, glasses/lenses, and other services not in the basic package.
Who needs it: Recommended for adults needing dental care, glasses, or regular physiotherapy.
Annual cost: €60–600/year depending on tier
Can only switch supplementary insurance together with basic insurance (annually in November). Pre-existing dental conditions may be excluded in the first year.
Legal expenses insurance
Covers legal fees for employment disputes, rental conflicts, contract disagreements, personal injury claims, and neighbour disputes.
Who needs it: Recommended for renters, employees, and self-employed. Especially useful for expats unfamiliar with Dutch law.
Annual cost: €120–240/year (€10–20/month)
Legal aid (gefinancierde rechtsbijstand) is available for low incomes via the Raad voor Rechtsbijstand. For middle incomes, legal expenses insurance is cost-effective.
Life insurance
Term life insurance paying a lump sum on death. Often required by mortgage providers. Provides income replacement for surviving dependants.
Who needs it: Homeowners with mortgage; parents with dependants; primary earners.
Annual cost: €10–50/month depending on age, health, and coverage amount
Many employers provide basic group life insurance (overlijdensdekking) as part of the pension scheme. Check this before purchasing individually.
Comparison sites
Take out basic health insurance within 4 months of arriving — retroactive premiums apply from day one.
Compare health insurance every November — insurers can change premiums and packages from 1 January.
Bundle home contents and personal liability insurance for a combined discount.
Self-employed persons must arrange their own disability insurance (AOV) — this is the most critical gap for ZZP workers.
Notify your insurer immediately when you move address — failure to update may invalidate claims.
