Qualification recognition in the Netherlands is handled by different authorities depending on whether the profession is regulated or not. For regulated professions (healthcare, teaching, law, engineering), formal recognition by the relevant professional body is required before practising. For non-regulated professions, employers decide whether to accept foreign qualifications. Academic qualifications are assessed by Nuffic/IDW (nuffic.nl) which provides official equivalency statements (diplomawaardering).
Regulated Professions
Process: For healthcare professions: apply for registration in the BIG register (beroepen in de individuele gezondheidszorg) — bigregister.nl. EU/EEA professionals: automatic recognition under EU directive 2005/36/EC applies for sectoral professions (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc.). Non-EU professionals: assessed individually. For teaching: recognition via DUO. For law: specific bars (Nederlandse orde van advocaten). For accountants: NBA.
Authority: BIG Register (bigregister.nl) for healthcare. DUO (duo.nl) for education. NBA (nba.nl) for accountants. NovAtel for technical professions. CIBG (cibg.nl) for pharmacists and other health professionals.
Timeline: EU automatic recognition: 1–4 months. Non-EU individual assessment: 3–12 months. Complex cases with significant differences: may require adaptation period (aanpassingsstage) or aptitude test (bekwaamheidstest).
Cost: €100–500 depending on the profession and assessment type.
Academic Degrees
Authority: Nuffic (nuffic.nl) / IDW (nuffic.nl/en/diploma-recognition) — the Netherlands Organisation for Internationalisation in Education.
Process: Apply online at idw.nuffic.nl with your diploma, transcripts, and certified translations. Nuffic issues a statement of Dutch equivalency (Dutch: diplomawaardering). Non-binding but very useful for employers and universities.
Equivalency service: IDW (Internationaal Diplomawaardering) at nuffic.nl — apply via "My IDW" online portal. Fee: €150–200 (varies by qualification complexity). Processing: typically 10 working weeks from complete application. Refugees integrating via inburgering: 1 free evaluation available. The IDW statement is non-binding but widely accepted by Dutch employers and universities.
Document Rules
Apostille: Documents from countries that are party to the Hague Apostille Convention (most countries) require an apostille stamp for official use in the Netherlands.
Legalisation: Documents from non-Apostille Convention countries require full legalisation: certified by Dutch embassy/consulate in the country of origin.
Sworn translation: Documents in languages other than Dutch, English, French, or German require a sworn translation (beëdigde vertaling) into Dutch by a sworn translator registered with the NGTV (ngtv.nl).
