Russia (RU)
The world's largest country, spanning Europe and Asia, with deep cultural institutions, large cities, strong public transport, complex bureaucracy, sanctions-affected banking, strict migration registration, and a demanding but sometimes affordable expat experience.
Family Rights & Benefits
Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Russia.
Family rights depend heavily on immigration status, Russian registration, employer contributions and whether a parent is covered by Russian social insurance.
Maternity leave
Before birth: 70 calendar days before the expected delivery date (for standard pregnancy).
After birth: 70 calendar days after delivery (standard). Total: 140 days. Extended to 156 days for complicated births; 194 days for multiple births. The benefit is paid by the Social Fund of Russia (SFR — Sotsialnyy fond Rossii), not the employer. 2026 amounts: minimum benefit for 140 days = RUB 124,702; maximum benefit for 140 days = RUB 955,836 (based on average earnings over the preceding 2 calendar years).
Job protection: Pregnant employees and new mothers have strong dismissal protections under labour law.
Childcare leave
Max duration: Up to child age 3 in employment law, with benefit rules for earlier periods.
Split rules / Elterngeld: Can be used by mother, father or qualifying relatives depending employment/status.
Benefits
Maternity Benefit (Posobiye po beremennosti i rodam)
2026: minimum RUB 124,702 / maximum RUB 955,836 for standard 140-day leave. Calculated from average daily earnings over the preceding 2 calendar years, multiplied by leave days.
Duration: 140 days (standard); 156 days (complicated birth); 194 days (multiple births)
Eligibility: Employed women registered with the Social Fund of Russia (SFR) who have made mandatory contributions. Foreign nationals legally employed in Russia contribute to SFR and are entitled to the benefit.
How to apply: The benefit is paid directly by the SFR (not by the employer) through the Gosuslugi (gosuslugi.ru) digital platform or at the SFR office. Submit: pregnancy certificate, employment record, average earnings calculation from the employer.
Russia switched to direct SFR payments (proactive payment model) — the employer submits employee data to SFR and the SFR pays the employee directly. Ensure your employer has registered you with SFR from day one.
One-Time Birth Benefit (Yedinnovremennoye posobiye)
RUB 28,773 per child (2026)
Duration: One-time payment
Eligibility: All parents (including foreign nationals legally employed in Russia) on birth of a child. Apply through Gosuslugi or SFR office.
How to apply: Apply through Gosuslugi (gosuslugi.ru) or in person at an MFC (multifunctional service centre) with: birth certificate, parents' identity documents, bank account details.
This is a separate payment from the maternity leave benefit. Available to working parents, self-employed, and in some cases non-working parents.
Childcare Benefit (up to age 1.5) (Posobiye po ukhodu za rebyonkom)
40% of average monthly earnings, calculated from the 2 years before the year of leave. Minimum approximately RUB 9,200/month; maximum approximately RUB 57,000/month (2026 — verify at sfr.gov.ru as caps are adjusted annually)
Duration: From end of maternity leave until child reaches age 1.5. After age 1.5, a minimal payment continues until age 3.
Eligibility: Parents on childcare leave who are registered with SFR. Either parent can take the leave.
How to apply: Apply through Gosuslugi or SFR at the start of childcare leave. Employer submits documentation to SFR; SFR pays directly to the parent.
The 40% benefit is capped. Higher-earning parents may receive significantly less than 40% of their working salary due to the cap. After age 1.5, the benefit drops sharply — many families plan childcare start-dates around this threshold.
Sick child leave
Paid sick child leave exists through medical certificate and social insurance rules for eligible employees.
Birth registration
Births are registered through ZAGS. Foreign parents need passport translations, marriage documents and immigration papers.
Childcare rights
Municipal childcare depends on registration and queue; private childcare is faster but costly.
