Banking in Saint Kitts and Nevis

Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.

Banking in Saint Kitts and Nevis is regulated by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) and is subject to intensive AML/KYC scrutiny — the islands' Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programme has attracted significant compliance attention, making banks cautious with new international account holders. The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD), pegged to USD at exactly 2.70 — USD is widely accepted in tourism, property, and investment contexts. Expats must present a full KYC package: passport, proof of residential address in SKN, source-of-funds documentation, employment or business registration, and CRS/FATCA self-certification. Account opening typically takes 1–4 weeks; US persons face additional FATCA scrutiny. For Citizenship by Investment or significant property transactions, routing all funds through documented bank channels and retaining permanent SWIFT records is essential.

Payment culture

The Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD) is the official currency, pegged to USD at 2.70. USD is widely accepted in tourist hotels, restaurants, shops, and real estate transactions — always confirm which currency is being quoted, as 'dollar' prices may mean EC or US dollars. Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards are accepted at hotels, resort shops, car rental agencies, and most larger restaurants in Basseterre and Frigate Bay. Local markets, minibus taxis, casual beach bars, and smaller vendors are cash-only. Cheques and bank drafts remain common for property closings, legal fees, and government transactions. ATM availability is adequate in Basseterre; more limited in rural St. Kitts and on Nevis — carry XCD/USD cash when exploring the islands. There are no local digital payment apps equivalent to Zelle or iDEAL.

Cash access

ATMs are available in Basseterre (Bay Road, Independence Square, Frigate Bay Road), Charlestown (Nevis), and Sandy Point. SKNAB has the widest ATM coverage across both islands. ATMs dispense XCD — for USD cash, request at a bank branch teller window. Carry XCD 200–400 for minibuses, markets, beach bars, and rural vendors. ATM limits: XCD 500–2,000 per transaction depending on card tier. Foreign bank card fees: XCD 5–15 per ATM withdrawal from most international banks. During Carnival (end of December), Culturama (Nevis, August), and hurricane-season power disruptions, maintain higher cash reserves.

No formal consumer credit bureau (bank relationship and reference history)

Saint Kitts and Nevis does not have a formal consumer credit bureau equivalent to SCHUFA or Equifax. Banks and lenders assess creditworthiness based on: existing banking history in SKN, salary deposit records, bank reference letters from current or prior institutions, and collateral (typically property). Request a reference letter from your existing bank when applying for credit in SKN.

Free annual check: Not applicable — no standardised consumer credit report system. Credit standing in SKN is based on direct banking relationship history.

Foreign credit history does not transfer to SKN. Build local credit through: maintaining active accounts with consistent deposits, paying utility bills by standing order, and establishing a clean record with SKNAB or Republic Bank. Most expats can open a current account and debit card without issues but require 12–24 months of documented local banking history before mortgage products are accessible.

International transfers

All SWIFT outbound transfers from SKN banks require source-of-funds documentation for amounts above XCD 5,000 (approx USD 1,850) — standard ECCB AML compliance. Allow 2–5 business days for SWIFT processing. CIBC FirstCaribbean and Republic Bank have the most robust international transfer infrastructure for high-volume or frequent transfers. Wise is cheaper for personal transfers from abroad or for converting currency before arriving. For CBI investments and property purchases: all fund transfers must go through a licensed bank with a documented SWIFT trail — cash or crypto transfers are not accepted.
