Steps to register:
- 1 1. Confirm your immigration status allows local work or self-employment. Work permits are required for non-nationals engaging in local business activity.
- 2 2. Register your business name or company with the Companies and Intellectual Property Office (Registrar of Companies) in Basseterre.
- 3 3. Obtain any sector-specific licence or professional approval from the relevant government ministry.
- 4 4. Register with the Inland Revenue Department for VAT if annual taxable turnover exceeds EC$96,000. Standard VAT rate: 17%.
- 5 5. Open a compliant business bank account at a local or regional bank (Bank of Nevis, St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank, CIBC FirstCaribbean). Bring registration documents and source-of-funds evidence.
- 6 6. Register employees with the Social Security Board (SSB) before running payroll. Employee contribution: 5%; employer contribution: 5% on top of gross wages.
- 7 7. Keep numbered invoices, receipts, and all foreign exchange records from day one โ essential for VAT returns and any Inland Revenue audit.
Tax registration
Saint Kitts and Nevis has NO personal income tax on wages and salaries โ abolished in 1980. However, companies pay corporate income tax at 35% on taxable profits. Register with the Inland Revenue Department for VAT, corporate tax, withholding tax, or payroll obligations. Even without personal income tax, business activity creates VAT, payroll, and corporate filing requirements.
VAT threshold
EC$96,000 annual taxable supplies triggers mandatory VAT registration. Standard rate: 17%; 0% for exports and certain goods. Below the threshold, voluntary registration is possible and may help reclaim input VAT on business costs. File monthly VAT returns with the Inland Revenue Department.
Invoicing
Issue numbered invoices showing: legal business name and address, VAT registration number (if registered), invoice date, description of services or goods, amounts in EC$ or USD, VAT amount separately stated, and payment terms. Quote currency clearly โ both EC$ and USD are widely used in commerce.
Social security
All employers must register employees with the Social Security Board (SSB) and remit contributions monthly. Employee contribution: 5% of gross wages (subject to the insurable earnings ceiling). Employer contribution: 5% on top of gross wages. Self-employed individuals contribute at combined rates (approximately 10% total) on declared earnings. Non-registration or late remittance carries penalties and interest charges.
๐ก Saint Kitts and Nevis is well-known for its Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programme โ this is entirely separate from standard work and business activity. Nevis IBCs and LLCs are popular offshore vehicles but do not automatically provide a tax advantage unless your home jurisdiction recognises the structure and substance requirements are met. Always seek cross-border tax advice before invoicing through a Nevis entity. A local company does not automatically grant immigration permission to work.
