Currency & Money
Practical money tips for living in Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Denominations
Coins: 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 25c, $1. Notes: $5, $10, $20, $50, $100. The XCD is pegged to the US dollar at about EC$2.70 = US$1.
Payment Culture
Cards are common in hotels, supermarkets, restaurants and marinas, but cash is still essential for buses, small shops, beach bars, market vendors and tradespeople. Many expat leases and property transactions are quoted in USD while local salaries and utilities are paid in XCD.
ATM Tips
Use bank ATMs from institutions such as Republic Bank, The Bank of Nevis, FirstCaribbean and National Bank. ATMs can run low around holidays, Carnival/Culturama and cruise-ship days. Keep a second card because foreign cards are sometimes blocked by fraud controls.
Exchange Tips
Use licensed banks or authorised dealers for significant FX, especially property, investment, company funding and future repatriation records. Avoid informal cash exchange; keep wire receipts and source-of-funds evidence for banking and tax compliance.
