๐
Permanent Residency
Name
Permanent Residency / Long-Term Residence
Eligibility
Saint Kitts and Nevis does not have a separate formal permanent-residency programme equivalent to the EU Permanent Residence Card. Long-term residence for most expats is maintained through the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programme (which confers citizenship, not just residency) or through employment and family-based residence permits that are renewable annually. Citizens of CBI-qualifying countries may also access multi-year residency.
Duration
Annual renewable residence permits; citizenship through CBI is permanent
Requirements
- โValid employment permit, spousal permit or other approved basis
- โClean police certificate from home country
- โHealth insurance coverage
- โProof of financial means
- โApplication to the St Kitts and Nevis Immigration Department
Most foreigners seeking long-term presence in Saint Kitts and Nevis use the CBI programme to obtain citizenship directly, rather than building toward it through a residency track. The standard naturalisation route is available for those who choose to reside on the island without CBI.

Citizenship
Name
Citizenship by Investment (CBI)
Eligibility
Saint Kitts and Nevis operates one of the world's oldest Citizenship by Investment programmes (established 1984). Two qualifying investment routes exist in 2026: (1) Sustainable Island State Contribution (SISC) โ a non-refundable government contribution of USD 250,000 for a single applicant (higher for families); (2) Approved real estate purchase of USD 325,000 or more (reduced from USD 400,000 effective 25 October 2024), with a 7-year hold period. All applicants must pass rigorous multi-tier due diligence. From 14 April 2026, biometric submission is mandatory for all CBI applicants; prior applicants have until 31 July 2027 to submit biometrics.
Duration
Permanent citizenship once granted; Saint Kitts passport renewable every 10 years
Requirements
- โSISC route: USD 250,000 non-refundable government contribution (single applicant; additional amounts for dependants)
- โReal estate route: USD 325,000+ in an approved CBI-qualifying real estate project with 7-year minimum hold
- โEngagement of a licensed Authorised Agent (mandatory)
- โMulti-tier background checks and due diligence (FBI/Interpol-level screening)
- โBiometric submission mandatory from 14 April 2026
- โMedical fitness certificate
- โClean criminal record from all countries of residence in the past 10 years
- โFamily documents for any dependants included in the application
The Saint Kitts and Nevis passport gives visa-free or on-arrival access to approximately 157 countries including the Schengen Area, UK and Singapore. Saint Kitts allows dual citizenship โ no renunciation of prior nationality is required. Processing time: typically 6โ12 months from complete application submission.
Other Routes to Residency & Citizenship
Naturalisation by Ordinary Residence
Eligibility
Foreign nationals who have resided lawfully and continuously in Saint Kitts and Nevis for approximately 5 to 7 years may apply for citizenship by naturalisation through the standard residence route. Good character, an oath of allegiance and knowledge of the country's civic principles are required. This is rarely used compared to the CBI route.
Duration / Outcome
Permanent citizenship once granted
Requirements
- โApproximately 5โ7 years of continuous lawful residence in Saint Kitts and Nevis
- โGood character โ clean criminal record
- โKnowledge of the Federation's history and civic principles
- โOath of allegiance to Saint Kitts and Nevis
- โApplication to the Ministry responsible for Citizenship
The standard residence route is available but rarely used given the CBI programme. Saint Kitts and Nevis allows dual citizenship.
Citizenship by Descent or Marriage
Eligibility
Persons born to at least one Kittitian or Nevisian citizen parent acquire citizenship at birth. Persons married to a citizen of Saint Kitts and Nevis may qualify for citizenship after a period of lawful residence and genuine marriage โ specific years should be confirmed with the Immigration Department as rules can change.
Duration / Outcome
Permanent citizenship once registered or granted
Requirements
- โBirth certificate showing Kittitian or Nevisian parent (for descent)
- โMarriage certificate and proof of genuine relationship (for spousal route)
- โParent or spouse's citizenship documentation
- โApplication to the Civil Registry or Immigration Department
Name spellings and record accuracy are critical in island civil registries โ older records may require additional verification. Saint Kitts and Nevis allows dual citizenship so there is no renunciation requirement.
๐ Dual Citizenship
โ
Dual citizenship is allowed โ Saint Kitts and Nevis permits dual citizenship. Citizens who acquire foreign nationality do not lose their Kittitian and Nevisian citizenship, and foreign nationals who obtain citizenship (through CBI, naturalisation, or descent) are not required to renounce prior nationality under Saint Kitts and Nevis law. Your other country of citizenship may have its own restrictions โ confirm before proceeding. CBI applicants should also confirm the tax, reporting and military obligations that may attach in their home country upon acquiring a second citizenship.
