Saint Kitts and Nevis (KN)
Saint Kitts and Nevis is a small English-speaking federation of two volcanic Caribbean islands with a stable Westminster-style legal system, no personal income tax, a mature offshore and tourism economy, and the world's oldest citizenship-by-investment programme.
Leaving Saint Kitts and Nevis
How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
3 months before departure: serve written notice to landlord per your contract terms. Notify international school with one full term advance notice. Contact SSB to obtain your contribution statement and understand pension entitlement options. 2 months before: notify employer formally of your departure date. Begin IRD tax affairs — request final PAYE certificate and apply for Tax Clearance Certificate if needed. Cancel private health insurance with 30-day notice. Arrange international health cover for your destination. 1 month before: cancel SKELEC/NEVLEC and water accounts (request final meter reading). Cancel internet/broadband (30-day notice). Notify bank of departure and update contact details. Begin selling or donating large furniture items. Final week: conduct joint move-out inspection with landlord. Return all keys and access cards. Settle all outstanding utility and building charges. Get written deposit return confirmation. Transfer remaining XCD via USD to your overseas account using Wise or bank wire. After departure: monitor bank account for SSB correspondence and any final salary or tax refund credits.
Deregistration
Saint Kitts and Nevis has no mandatory municipal address deregistration. Required departure steps for foreign residents: (1) Immigration Department: if you hold a work permit or resident permit, your employer must notify the Labour Department of your employment end and the immigration authorities. Ensure your work permit is formally cancelled rather than allowed to expire silently — contact the Immigration Department (immigration.gov.kn). (2) Citizenship by Investment (CBI) holders: notify the Citizenship by Investment Unit (CIU) of any material change of status — permanent departure does not forfeit CBI citizenship, but address records should be updated. (3) Company closure: if you operated a company registered with the Companies Registry, formally dissolve or transfer it through the Registrar of Companies before leaving — inactive companies generate annual reporting obligations. (4) Employer departure documentation: obtain your final payslip, Social Security Board contribution history, and a leaving letter from your employer. (5) Schools: notify international schools with the required advance notice (typically one full term) — RFSS, Montessori on the Move, and other private schools have specific withdrawal policies. (6) No formal address registry: Saint Kitts and Nevis does not maintain a centralised population address registry for non-citizens, so there is no address deregistration step.
Tax clearance
Inland Revenue Department (IRD, ird.gov.kn) administers personal income tax in Saint Kitts and Nevis: (1) Income tax rate: employees pay a flat 10.5% income tax on income above XCD 26,000 per year (2026 threshold — verify with IRD as thresholds are periodically adjusted). Employer PAYE deductions should cover this for salaried employees. (2) Final income tax return: if you were filing individual returns (self-employed, rental income, or business income), file a final return with IRD for the period of departure. IRD accepts returns in person at Pelican Mall (Basseterre) or in Nevis at the Government Administration Building in Charlestown. (3) Tax clearance certificate: IRD issues a Tax Clearance Certificate confirming no outstanding tax liabilities — required for company dissolution and sometimes for property sales. Apply at IRD with your tax identification number. Processing: 5–10 working days. (4) Business closure taxes: if you operated a business, file final VAT returns, settle all employment taxes, and obtain tax clearance before deregistering the company. (5) No personal income tax on investment income: Saint Kitts and Nevis does not tax interest, dividends, or capital gains at the personal level — a benefit that simplifies departure tax for investors. (6) Property tax: if you own property in Saint Kitts and Nevis, property tax obligations continue even after departure — arrange payment from abroad or via a local agent.
Pension portability
Social Security Board (SSB, socialsecurity.kn) administers social security in Saint Kitts and Nevis: (1) SSB pension: both employee (5%) and employer (5%) contribute to SSB — a combined 10% of insurable earnings up to the XCD earnings ceiling. (2) Eligibility for pension: you qualify for an old-age pension at age 62 (normal retirement age) with a minimum of 500 weeks of contributions (approximately 10 years). If you leave before meeting this threshold, your contributions remain on record and you may claim a pension at retirement age if you later meet the contribution requirement. (3) Departure refund: if you are a non-citizen and have fewer than 500 qualifying weeks of contributions, you may be eligible for a lump-sum benefit (pension grant) rather than a monthly pension. Contact the SSB (Church Street, Basseterre; or Nevis SSB office in Charlestown) well before departure to obtain your contribution statement and understand your specific entitlement. (4) No bilateral social security totalisation agreements with most Western countries — your Saint Kitts SSB contributions cannot typically be credited toward a home-country pension. (5) Citizenship by Investment holders: CBI has no direct interaction with SSB — unless you were also employed in Saint Kitts, CBI status alone does not generate SSB contributions.
Health insurance
Saint Kitts and Nevis does not have a universal national health insurance system. Healthcare for residents is a mix of public facilities and private insurance: (1) Employer group health plan: coverage ends on your last working day — confirm the exact end date with HR and request a certificate of coverage. (2) Private international health insurance (Sagicor, Guardian Life, Pan American Life, or international providers): cancel with the required notice period (typically 30 days). Request a pro-rated premium refund for unused coverage. (3) Arrange international or home-country health insurance before your Kittitian cover ends. (4) Public healthcare: Joseph N. France General Hospital (Basseterre) and Alexandra Hospital (Nevis) provide public services — fees for non-residents apply. (5) Medical records: request copies from your GP or hospital. The public hospitals can provide records within 5–10 working days on formal request. (6) Prescription medications: collect an adequate supply for the transition period.
Bank account
Banking in Saint Kitts and Nevis uses the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD), pegged 1:1 with the USD at XCD 2.70 = USD 1. Major banks include CIBC FirstCaribbean, RBC Royal Bank, Bank of St. Kitts (Republic Bank), and Nevis Co-operative Credit Union. Practical departure steps: (1) Notify your bank of your departure and update your contact details and tax residency (CRS/FATCA reporting). (2) Keep your account open for 2–3 months to receive: final salary, SSB correspondence, deposit return, and any outstanding payments. (3) International transfers: XCD converts through USD — use USD accounts or Wise for the best FX rates. Direct USD transfers are straightforward given the peg. (4) Citizenship by Investment accounts: if you maintain investments tied to your CBI status (real estate, approved business), ensure bank accounts linked to these investments remain active. (5) Close accounts you will not maintain in person — most Caribbean banks do not offer fully remote account closure. Arrange power of attorney if you cannot visit in person.
Utilities
Utility providers in Saint Kitts and Nevis: (1) Electricity — SKELEC (St. Kitts Electricity Company) on St. Kitts; NEVLEC (Nevis Electricity Company) on Nevis. Contact your provider to schedule a final meter reading and account closure. Return any smart meter equipment or rental fobs if applicable. Security deposits (typically 2–3 months of estimated usage) are refunded after the final bill — allow 30–60 days. (2) Water — St. Kitts Water Services Department; Nevis Water Department. Request account closure and final meter reading. (3) Internet/telecommunications — FLOW (C&W Business), Digicel. Check your contract for notice periods (typically 30 days). Return rented routers. Request a written cancellation confirmation number. (4) Mobile phone — Digicel, FLOW: cancel postpaid plans in store. Prepaid SIMs can lapse. Retain one SIM for OTPs after departure if needed. (5) LPG gas cylinders: return to your gas dealer and recover the cylinder deposit.
Rental contract
Saint Kitts and Nevis rental agreements are governed by contract terms — there is no standardised Residential Tenancies Act. Practical departure steps: (1) Notice period: check your lease carefully — typically 1–3 months written notice is required. Monthly arrangements often require 1 month. Longer fixed-term leases may require 3 months or specify a break fee. (2) Written notice: provide notice in writing (email with confirmation, letter delivered in person). Keep a copy with the delivery date. (3) Move-out inspection: conduct jointly with the landlord or property manager on the move-out day. Photograph and video every room, appliance, fixture, and the exterior of the property — hurricane shutters and weather sealing deserve particular attention, as tenants are sometimes charged for storm-related items. (4) Deposit return: typically 1–2 months rent. No statutory return deadline exists — agree the timeline and method in writing before handing over keys. If paying internationally, confirm the bank or transfer details in writing. (5) Outstanding utilities: settle all SKELEC/NEVLEC and water accounts before handover — landlords routinely condition deposit return on utility clearance. Get written proof of settled utility accounts.
