Slovakia (SK)
Slovakia is a landlocked Central European republic that joined the European Union in 2004 and the Eurozone in 2009.
Digital Services
Digital ID, e-government and essential apps in Slovakia.
eID (Elektronický občiansky preukaz)
The Slovak electronic identity card — the standard Slovak national ID card (občiansky preukaz) has included an eID chip since 2013. The chip enables digital authentication and signing for eGovernment services. A card reader (čítačka) or the OverSi mobile app can be used for authentication.
How to get it: The eID card is issued to Slovak citizens and long-term residents at the Oddelenie dokladov (Document Section) at the Okresný úrad or any police station that handles documents. Citizens receive an eID card automatically when renewing their national ID. PIN must be activated at the time of collection — if not activated, visit a police document office to activate. The eID card is linked to your rodné číslo.
E-Government Portal
https://www.slovensko.skslovensko.sk is Slovakia's central eGovernment portal. All state authorities are required to accept electronic submissions via the portal. An eID card with activated chip and PIN (or the OverSi mobile app) is required for most services. The electronic mailbox (elektronická schránka) on slovensko.sk receives official government correspondence — businesses must use it; individuals may opt in. Registration required for individuals: activate your mailbox with eID. Every Slovak legal entity (company) has a mandatory activated electronic mailbox. The system went through significant improvements 2020–2025 — it now functions reliably for most key services.

Slovakia's digital services infrastructure has improved significantly in recent years. The eID chip and the OverSi mobile app make eGovernment services accessible without needing a physical card reader. However, some services still require in-person visits — particularly the initial eID activation and some processes at the Cudzinecká polícia (Foreign Police) and Daňový úrad. Electronic mailboxes (elektronické schránky) on slovensko.sk are mandatory for businesses and government-registered entities — individual residents can activate theirs voluntarily (strongly recommended). Slovak online banking is modern and well-developed, with Tatra banka and the Erste Group's George platform generally regarded as the best user experiences.
