Public Transport Overview

Bratislava has a comprehensive public transport network operated by Dopravný podnik Bratislava (DPB), comprising trams (električka), trolleybuses (trolejbus), and motor buses (autobus). The network is integrated with a single ticket system. Bratislava's tram network (though not extensive) connects key areas; trolleybuses serve inner city routes; buses cover the broader metropolitan area including suburbs. The city is compact enough that most areas are reachable by public transit within 20–30 minutes. Beyond Bratislava, regional bus services (SAD — Slovenská autobusová doprava) and trains (ŽSR — Železnice Slovenskej republiky) connect cities and towns. In Bratislava, the system operates from approximately 04:30 until midnight with night buses covering the gaps. Tickets can be purchased via machines, the IMHD.sk app, or SMS.

💡 Slovakia's train network connects all major cities. Bratislava–Košice takes about 3.5 hours. Advance booking (cez zssk.sk) available. IC trains are faster and more comfortable. Students and seniors get 50% discount on national trains.

Taxi & Rideshare

Licensed taxis in Bratislava are metered — check that the meter is running. Bolt and Uber operate in Bratislava and are generally cheaper and more convenient than street taxis. Liftago (Slovak app) is also available. Pre-booking via app is recommended to avoid overcharging. Typical Bratislava city fare: €5–15. Airport to centre: approximately €15–25 (30 minutes without traffic). Taxi to Vienna Airport or centre: approximately €30–50 depending on operator.

Rideshare (Long-distance)

Bolt and Uber are widely used in Bratislava. BlaBlaCar is popular for intercity travel — Bratislava to Košice, Prague, Vienna, and Budapest are common routes. Slovak carpooling culture is strong — BlaBlaCar rideshares fill up quickly for major routes, especially for Bratislava–Prague.

Cycling

Bratislava has a growing cycling infrastructure but is not yet a cycling-first city like Amsterdam or Copenhagen. The Danube cycleway (Eurovelo 6) passes through Bratislava and continues to Vienna — a popular leisure route. City bike rental via Antik Bike Share (docked stations) is available. Electric scooters (e-scooters) by Bolt and Bird operate in Bratislava. Some streets in the Old Town have dedicated cycle lanes. Cycling the 60 km to Vienna along the Danube cycleway is a popular weekend activity.

Intercity Trains

ZSSK operates intercity trains across Slovakia. Key routes: Bratislava–Košice (about 3.5 hours, IC train), Bratislava–Žilina (about 2 hours), Bratislava–Banská Bystrica (about 2.5 hours). RegioJet offers competitive prices and higher comfort on key routes. International rail: Vienna–Bratislava is just 1 hour by EC/IC train (remarkably good connections — trains every 1–2 hours). Bratislava–Budapest: about 2.5 hours by EC train. Bratislava–Prague: about 4 hours (RegioJet or ZSSK/ČD).

Driving

Slovakia drives on the right. A digital motorway vignette (diaľničná nálepka) is required to use Slovak motorways and expressways — available at petrol stations, border crossings, or online at eznamka.sk. Annual vignette: €90. 10-day: €10.80. 30-day: €17.10. Speed limits: 130 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on main roads, 50 km/h in towns. Winter tyres are mandatory from 15 November to 31 March (in practice strongly recommended earlier). Alcohol limit: 0.0% (zero tolerance — Slovakia has a strict zero BAC policy). Wearing seatbelts is mandatory. Children under 150 cm must use appropriate child seats. Bratislava has growing traffic congestion, especially on routes toward Vienna during rush hour.

Airports

Bratislava International Airport (BTS / Letisko M. R. Štefánika) is a smaller regional airport — limited international routes but growing. Many Bratislava residents use Vienna International Airport (VIE), just 50 km away, for wider route selection. From Bratislava: direct buses run to Vienna Airport every 30–60 minutes (€5–8, about 70–90 minutes). Bus companies: RegioJet, Eurobus. Bratislava–Vienna Airport connections are a major market. Budapest Airport (BUD) is also about 2 hours by bus.
