Slovakia (SK)
Slovakia is a landlocked Central European republic that joined the European Union in 2004 and the Eurozone in 2009.
Insurance Guide
Which insurances you actually need in Slovakia, prioritised.
Slovakia's insurance market has developed significantly since EU accession. The three most important insurance types for expats are: public health insurance (mandatory, handled through health insurance funds), MTPL car insurance (mandatory for vehicle owners), and home/contents insurance (strongly recommended for renters). Beyond these, supplementary health insurance, life insurance, and travel insurance fill important gaps. Major Slovak and international insurers operate in the market. Insurance can be purchased online, at bank branches, or through independent brokers.
Legally Mandatory
- - Zdravotné poistenie (Health insurance): mandatory for all Slovak residents — paid through the health insurance fund system
- - Povinné zmluvné poistenie (PZP — third-party liability car insurance): mandatory for all registered vehicle owners in Slovakia
- - Zákonné poistenie zodpovednosti zamestnávateľa (Employer liability insurance): mandatory for employers
Public Health Insurance
Mandatory social health insurance covering GP visits, hospital treatment, specialist visits (with referral), maternity care, emergency services, and subsidised prescriptions.
Who needs it: All residents of Slovakia — legally mandatory without exception.
Annual cost: Employee: 4% of gross salary. Minimum contribution (self-employed/unemployed): approximately €89/month in 2026.
Must be registered with one fund. You can switch funds once per calendar year (request by 30 September for the following year). Compare funds for quality of service and provider network in your area. VšZP has the widest provider network; Dôvera and Union may offer better customer service tools.
Third-Party Motor Liability Insurance
Mandatory insurance for all registered vehicles — covers damage or injury caused to third parties in a road accident.
Who needs it: All vehicle owners in Slovakia.
Annual cost: €100–300/year depending on vehicle type, driver age, and claims history
PZP is strictly mandatory — driving without it results in heavy fines and personal liability for accident costs. Buy before registration or when taking over a vehicle. Comparison sites: poistenie.sk, e-poistenie.sk.
Supplementary / Private Health Insurance
Covers dental care, faster access to specialists, private hospital rooms, treatments not covered by the public system, and access to English-speaking physicians. Used alongside (not instead of) public health insurance.
Who needs it: Expats who want faster access to care, English-speaking doctors, or dental coverage beyond the minimal public system.
Annual cost: €200–800/year depending on coverage level
Some multinational employers in Slovakia provide supplementary health insurance as part of the benefits package — check your employment contract. For dental care in particular, private insurance or a designated dental savings plan is strongly recommended.
Comprehensive Car Insurance (KASKO)
Covers damage to your own vehicle (accident, theft, vandalism, natural disaster) in addition to the mandatory PZP.
Who needs it: New or high-value vehicle owners, those with car loans (often required by the lender), and drivers who want full protection.
Annual cost: €200–600+/year depending on vehicle value and coverage
Particularly valuable for vehicles financed on credit — lenders typically require KASKO. Also recommended for expats with newer vehicles or those parking in high-theft areas.
Home Contents Insurance
Covers personal possessions and furniture against theft, fire, water damage, and other risks. Often includes liability coverage for damage caused to neighbours (e.g., water leak).
Who needs it: All renters and homeowners. Some rental contracts in Slovakia require tenants to hold this insurance.
Annual cost: €80–200/year for a standard apartment
Often bundled with liability insurance (poistenie zodpovednosti) at low additional cost. Check whether your landlord's building insurance covers your contents — typically it does not. Bratislava's panel blocks (paneláky) have specific water damage risks (shared plumbing systems).
Travel Insurance
Covers medical emergencies, cancellation, lost luggage, and liability when travelling outside Slovakia. The Slovak EHIC covers emergency care in EU countries but not cancellation, repatriation, or non-emergency treatment.
Who needs it: All travellers outside Slovakia, especially to non-EU countries. EU travel: EHIC covers basics but travel insurance adds cancellation and wider medical coverage.
Annual cost: €50–150/year for an annual multi-trip policy
Annual travel insurance policies are very cost-effective for frequent travellers. Some Slovak bank accounts (Premium/Gold cards) include travel insurance as a benefit — check your bank account terms.
Life Insurance
Provides financial protection for dependants in case of the policyholder's death or serious illness. Some policies include investment components (investičné životné poistenie). Mortgage providers often require life insurance.
Who needs it: Those with dependants, mortgage holders, or primary earners in a family.
Annual cost: €200–600+/year depending on coverage amount, age, and health
Term life insurance (rizikové životné poistenie) is the most cost-effective form of protection. Investment-linked products may have higher fees — compare carefully. Life insurance premiums in Slovakia are significantly lower than in Western Europe.
Legal Protection Insurance
Covers legal fees for disputes (employment, housing, consumer, traffic). Particularly useful for expats navigating an unfamiliar legal system.
Who needs it: Those in complex employment situations, self-employed persons, or renters in disputed accommodation.
Annual cost: €80–200/year
Legal protection insurance is underused but very valuable for expats facing potential housing disputes (Slovak tenancy law can be complex) or employment disputes.
Comparison sites
Register with a health insurance fund within 8 days of starting work — fines apply for delayed registration.
Compare health insurance funds for provider network and customer service before registering — switching is allowed once per year (deadline: 30 September).
Motor insurance (PZP) can be compared and purchased entirely online at poistenie.sk — direct Slovak insurer websites also offer competitive rates.
Bundle home contents insurance with liability insurance (zodpovednosť) — the combined product protects against neighbour claims for water damage, a very common Slovak housing dispute type.
Check whether your employer provides supplementary health or travel insurance as part of your benefits package before purchasing separately.
Life insurance contributions are tax-deductible in Slovakia up to €400/year — keep certificates for your tax return.
