Slovakia (SK)
Slovakia is a landlocked Central European republic that joined the European Union in 2004 and the Eurozone in 2009.
Family Rights & Benefits
Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Slovakia.
Slovakia has a comprehensive family support system funded through social insurance contributions and state budget. Maternity and parental leave entitlements are generous by international standards. Benefits are accessible to EU citizens and non-EU legal residents meeting the eligibility criteria. The system is administered by Sociálna poisťovňa (social insurance) for maternity pay and by the Ústredie práce, sociálnych vecí a rodiny (ÚPSVaR — Labour Office) for child benefits. Slovakia has higher-than-EU-average birth rates among larger EU nations, partly reflecting the strong family support infrastructure.
Materská dovolenka (Maternity leave) / Tehotenstvo a materstvo
Before birth: 6 weeks before the expected birth date (can start up to 8 weeks before birth). This period is paid as tehotenské (pregnancy benefit) from Sociálna poisťovňa at 55% of daily assessment base.
After birth: 28 weeks after birth (standard); 37 weeks after birth for multiple births (43 weeks total); 31 weeks after birth for single parents (37 weeks total). Paid as materské (maternity benefit) at 75% of daily assessment base from Sociálna poisťovňa. The mother must have been insured (nemocensky poistená) for at least 270 days in the 2 years preceding the birth. This payment is taxable but lower than employment income.
Job protection: Absolute job protection during the full maternity leave period. Employer cannot dismiss or give notice to a pregnant employee or an employee on maternity leave. After return from maternity leave, the employee must be offered the same position (or equivalent). Employment contract terms cannot be changed disadvantageously.
Rodičovská dovolenka (Parental leave)
Max duration: Until the child reaches 3 years of age (or 6 years for a child with a long-term health condition). After maternity leave ends, either parent can take parental leave. The parental leave is unpaid (beyond the rodičovský príspevok state benefit — see below), but the employer must keep the job available.
Split rules / Elterngeld: Parental leave can be transferred between parents at any time. Only one parent can be on parental leave at the same time claiming rodičovský príspevok (parental allowance). Fathers can take maternity-equivalent leave (otcovský príspevok — paternity benefit) separately: a 2-week paid paternity leave introduced in 2023.
Benefits
Materské (Maternity benefit)
75% of the mother's daily assessment base × days of maternity leave. Average: approximately €700–1,500/month depending on previous salary.
Duration: 28 weeks (34 for multiples)
Eligibility: Employed or self-employed mothers insured with Sociálna poisťovňa for at least 270 days in the previous 2 years.
How to apply: Submit application form to Sociálna poisťovňa via your employer or directly. Required: medical confirmation of pregnancy/birth, PN certificate.
Fathers cannot claim materské — this is for mothers only (fathers have a separate otcovský príspevok). Payments begin when maternity leave starts.
Rodičovský príspevok (Parental allowance)
€364.80/month (standard, January 2026) or €500.20/month if the parent was previously receiving maternity benefit or equivalent EU/EEA benefit. Enhanced rate for parents who worked: claim parental allowance within 3 years of birth for the higher amount.
Duration: Until the child turns 3 years old (6 years for children with serious health conditions). Monthly payment.
Eligibility: Parent (mother or father) caring for a child at home. Must not be in paid employment during the benefit claim period (with limited exceptions). Must be a Slovak resident. EU citizens with Slovak residence are eligible.
How to apply: Apply at the Úrad práce, sociálnych vecí a rodiny (ÚPSVaR) in your district. Required documents: birth certificate of child, ID of parent, proof of residence (trvalý pobyt confirmation).
One of Slovakia's most important family benefits. Note that the enhanced rate applies only if the parent had qualifying employment income before taking parental leave — file within the time limits. Rodičovský príspevok and pre-school childcare (jasle/materská) can be combined under certain rules.
Prídavok na dieťa (Child benefit)
€50.70/month per child (2026 figure, indexed annually).
Duration: From birth until the child turns 25 (if still in full-time education) or 18 (if not).
Eligibility: Parent/guardian with a dependent child registered in Slovakia. EU citizens with children registered in Slovakia are generally entitled. Income-independent — not means-tested.
How to apply: Apply at the ÚPSVaR. Documents: birth certificate of child, proof of school attendance (if over 16), residence confirmation.
The prídavok na dieťa is a basic universal child benefit. Combined with the daňový bonus na dieťa (child tax credit), the total support for families with children is meaningful.
Daňový bonus na dieťa (Child tax credit)
€140/month (under 6 years); €50/month (6–15 years); €40/month (15–18 years) — 2026 approximate. The bonus reduces your tax liability directly — more valuable than a deduction.
Duration: Until the child turns 18 (or 25 if in full-time education)
Eligibility: Parent earning at least minimum wage monthly. Applied through the annual tax return or via employer payroll deduction. Both parents cannot claim simultaneously — only one parent per child per year.
How to apply: Declare on your annual tax return (daňové priznanie) or request from your employer in your tax form (žiadosť o ročné zúčtovanie).
The daňový bonus is particularly valuable for lower and middle earners because it directly reduces tax payable (not just taxable income). Combined with prídavok na dieťa, total state support for a young child can be €190+/month.
Príplatok k príspevku pri narodení dieťaťa (Birth grant)
€829.86 for first child; €605.61 for second; €385.61 for third and subsequent (2026 approximate)
Duration: One-time payment upon birth
Eligibility: Parent of a newborn child who is a Slovak resident. Also available to adoptive parents.
How to apply: Apply at ÚPSVaR within 6 months of birth. Bring birth certificate and ID.
A one-time birth grant paid to help cover initial costs. The amount is higher for first-born children.
Otcovský príspevok (Paternity benefit)
75% of daily assessment base × 14 days (same rate as materské)
Duration: 14 days (from 2023 reform)
Eligibility: Fathers who were insured with Sociálna poisťovňa for at least 270 days in the previous 2 years and take the 14-day leave within the first 6 weeks of the child's life.
How to apply: Apply to Sociálna poisťovňa through employer payroll.
Paternity benefit was introduced as a new right in Slovakia from 2023. Fathers can take 2 weeks of paid leave specifically designated as otcovský príspevok — separate from general parental leave.
Sick child leave
Parents are entitled to leave to care for a sick child (ošetrovné / OČR — ošetrovanie člena rodiny). Duration: up to 10 days per year per parent (14 days for lone parents). Children under 3 years: up to 30 days. Ošetrovné is paid by Sociálna poisťovňa at 55% of the daily assessment base. A doctor's certificate (výpis z chorobopisu) is required. Both parents cannot claim simultaneously for the same child. The parent must personally care for the child — not delegate to a babysitter or grandparent.
Birth registration
All births must be registered at the Matrika (Registry Office) at the local Obecný/Mestský úrad within 3 business days of birth. The hospital typically assists with the birth registration forms for births in Slovak maternity hospitals. Both parents should present their identity documents. The child receives a rodné číslo (personal ID number) at registration. For international parents: the child may also need to be registered with the parent's home country embassy or consulate.
Childcare rights
Children have a legal right to a place in a materská škola (kindergarten) from the age of 3. Municipalities are legally required to provide places. This right was strengthened by law in 2021 — municipalities face penalties if they cannot provide places for all 3+ year old children registered in their territory. The year before primary school (at age 5–6) is compulsory (povinná predprimárna edukácia). Pre-school registration (zápis) occurs annually in spring.
