👶 Childcare & Kindergarten

Jasle (Infant nursery) €100–400/month depending on municipality and type (public/private)

Subsidy available

Municipal jasle are heavily subsidised. Private jasle receive partial state subsidy from 2023 reform. Bratislava and large cities have most options. Municipalities are legally required to provide childcare from age 3.

Apply to the municipal jasle via the Mestský úrad (city office) or directly to private providers. Documents: birth certificate, health documentation, vaccination record.

⏱️ Register as early as possible — public jasle places are limited. Many parents apply before the child is even born. Private jasle typically have shorter waiting times but higher costs.

Materská škola (Kindergarten) Public: €15–80/month (meals only — attendance is free for children aged 5+ years). Private: €200–500/month

Subsidy available

Public kindergarten attendance is free from age 5 (mandatory year before school entry). Children aged 3–4 in public kindergartens pay only meal costs (€15–30/month). State subsidy of €280/month for 5-year-olds applies to private kindergartens from 2023.

Apply at the chosen materská škola or via the municipal office during the annual zápis (enrolment period, typically March–April). Bring the child's birth certificate, vaccination record, and your address registration proof.

Apply directly to the chosen international preschool. Waiting lists are common at popular Bratislava international schools. Register early — often a year in advance. English-language and bilingual preschools are growing in number in Bratislava.

Základná škola (ZŠ) Free

Základná škola

Ages: 6–15 years (Grades 1–9) · Language: Slovak (primary language). Some schools with Hungarian instruction in southern Slovakia. International/private schools offer English-medium instruction.

Enrolment (zápis) takes place in January–February for September start. Children must attend the základná škola in their district based on registered address (trvalý pobyt). EU/non-EU children with residence permits have the right to attend Slovak public schools free of charge. Required documents: birth certificate, health documentation, vaccination record, proof of address. Children who do not speak Slovak may require preparatory Slovak language classes initially.

Slovak education is generally academic and homework-intensive. Foreign children typically adapt within one year if placed with Slovak-speaking peers. Some Bratislava schools have experience with international pupils. Grade repetition (opakovanie ročníka) is possible if standards are not met — relatively more common than in Western Europe.

Stredná škola — Gymnázium / Stredná odborná škola (SOŠ) Free

Gymnázium (academic) / Stredná odborná škola (vocational)

Ages: 15–19 years (Grades 1–4) · Language: Slovak. Some gymnáziá offer bilingual streams (English-Slovak, French-Slovak, German-Slovak) — very popular and competitive.

Admission via centrally organised prihlášky (applications) and entrance examinations (prijímacie skúšky) in April–May for September. Bilingual gymnáziá are highly competitive — only the strongest primary school pupils are admitted. EU children have the right to attend state secondary schools. Results of national testing (Testovanie 5, Testovanie 9) influence secondary school placement.

Gymnázium (academic secondary school) leads to the maturita (school-leaving exam, equivalent to A-levels). SOŠ (vocational secondary school) provides practical training and also ends with a maturita or výučný list (apprenticeship certificate). The maturita is required for university admission. Slovakia has a strong tradition of vocational education.

International Schools

Bratislava has a good selection of international schools, primarily serving the diplomatic and multinational expat community. Key options: The International School of Bratislava (ISB — IB curriculum, English medium, most established), The British International School Bratislava (BISB — 2025/26 fees €12,640–27,530/year), QSI International School of Bratislava (American curriculum), Riverside School (Czech-Slovak cross-border school, English medium), and various private Slovak schools with bilingual programmes. International school fees range from approximately €7,000 (pre-school) to €27,500+/year (senior IB Diploma years). Many multinational employers in Bratislava offer school fee allowances as part of expat packages. The proximity to Vienna also allows some Bratislava-based families to use Vienna international schools — though commuting is impractical for daily school attendance.

University

Tuition fee

Public university education is free for EU citizens studying in the Slovak language. Slovak public universities charge fees (€1,000–5,000/year) for foreign-language programmes and for students who do not complete their degree within the standard duration. Non-EU students at public universities typically pay €1,000–8,000/year depending on the programme and institution. Private universities charge fees for all students.

Semester fee

No semester fees for standard Slovak-language programmes at public universities (tuition-free). Laboratory or materials fees may apply (typically €50–200/year for practical programmes). Library and ID card fees are nominal.

Student visa

EU citizens do not need a student visa. Non-EU students need a residence permit for study (povolenie na pobyt za účelom štúdia). Apply at the Cudzinecká polícia with an acceptance letter from the university. Slovak universities can assist with the application process.

Health insurance

Students enrolled at Slovak universities are eligible for the public health insurance system. EU students should have their home country EHIC until they register in the Slovak system. Students with health insurance registration in Slovakia access public healthcare at no direct cost.

Application process

Applications (prihlášky) submitted directly to each university (each has its own system). Main application deadline: March–April for September start. Entrance examinations (prijímacie skúšky) are common for competitive programmes. Maturita certificate required. Most Slovak universities now accept English CVs and motivation letters from international applicants.

Slovak language course for migrants (Kurz slovenského jazyka pre cudzincov)

Provider: Centrum pre integráciu cudzincov (CIC — Integration Centre for Foreigners) and various language schools · Duration: 3–6 months (A1–B1 levels) · Levels: A1–B2

€200–800/course (state-subsidised for some non-EU nationals under the integration programme). Free for some participants under the Integrogram programme.

Non-EU nationals integrating into Slovakia should pursue Slovak language training. CIC (Centrum pre integráciu cudzincov) in Bratislava and Košice offers subsidised courses for migrants. Slovak is key for citizenship (B1 level required) and greatly aids integration in daily life.

Standard commercial language courses
