Ústredie práce, sociálnych vecí a rodiny (ÚPSVaR)

ÚPSVaR — Úrady práce

Register in person at the local Úrad práce (Labour Office) in your district. Bring your ID/passport, rodné číslo, and employment history documents. Registration gives access to job placement services and is required to claim nezamestnanosť (unemployment benefit). For EU citizens: registration is straightforward. For non-EU citizens: work permit or residence permit that allows work is required before job-seeking.

Expat eligibility: EU/EEA citizens have the same rights as Slovak citizens to register and access all services. Non-EU nationals with valid work permits can also register. 💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens have the right to work in Slovakia without a work permit. They must register at the Cudzinecká polícia (Foreign Police) within 90 days of arrival for stays exceeding 90 days and obtain a pobytový preukaz (residence card). Employers are required to notify the ÚPSVaR within 7 days of hiring an EU citizen.

Non-EU Citizens

Non-EU nationals generally need both a residence permit (pobytové povolenie) and a work permit (pracovné povolenie), or a combined permit. Single permit (jednotné povolenie) available for new applicants — combines residence and work authorisation. Apply at the Cudzinecká polícia. Employer must first get confirmation from the ÚPSVaR that the position cannot be filled by an EU citizen (labour market test) — exceptions exist for shortage occupations.

EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card (Modrá karta EÚ) is available in Slovakia for highly qualified non-EU workers. Requirements: university degree, job offer with salary at least 1.5× the average gross wage (approximately €2,750+/month gross in 2026). Processing: typically 30–90 days. Provides 3-year residence and work permit with simplified renewal. Blue Card holders can move to other EU countries after 18 months.

Freelancer Visa

No specific digital nomad visa. Self-employed residence permits (povolenie na pobyt za účelom podnikania) are available for non-EU nationals who establish a business in Slovakia. EU citizens can operate as živnostník (sole trader) freely with just the živnostenský list registration.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours 8:00/9:00–17:00/18:00 (8–9 hours per day, 40 hours per week standard). Many Slovak companies allow some flexibility. Remote work (home office) has become normalised post-COVID, especially in IT and multinational environments. Slovak law entitles employees to at least 3 days per month of home office if the employer agrees.

Annual leave Minimum 4 weeks (20 working days) per year by law. After 5 years with the same employer: 5 weeks (25 days). Many employers in IT and professional services offer 25+ days. Public holidays (16 per year) are additional to annual leave.

Sick leave First 3 days of illness: no pay (waiting period — karenčná doba). Days 4–10: employer pays 25% of salary. From day 11: Sociálna poisťovňa pays nemocenské (sick pay) at 55–65% of assessment base. A doctor's certificate (PN — pracovná neschopnosť) is required from the first day. 2026 reform: the waiting period has been a politically contentious issue.

Trial period Maximum 3 months probation (skúšobná doba) for standard employees; 6 months for managers (vedúci zamestnanec). Employment can be terminated by either party during probation without notice or reason.

Notice period Standard minimum notice: 1 month if employed less than 1 year; 2 months if 1–5 years; 3 months if over 5 years. Notice periods can be extended by agreement. During probation: immediate termination by either party.

Salary range Average gross monthly salary: approximately €1,500–1,700 (Slovakia, 2026). Bratislava: significantly higher — €1,900–2,600 average in professional services. IT sector: €2,500–5,000+ gross/month depending on role. Minimum wage 2026: €915/month gross (effective January 1 — a 12.1% increase from €816 in 2025). Senior IT/engineering roles at multinationals: €3,500–7,000+.

Pay frequency Monthly — salary paid by the end of each calendar month (or a specific agreed date). Slovak law requires payment by the end of the month following the work month at the latest.

📝 Application Tips

CV format: Slovak employers generally use the Europass CV format or a clean professional CV with photo (yes — photos on CVs are standard and expected in Slovakia, unlike in some Western countries). CV should be in Slovak unless applying to a specifically English-language role or multinational. 1–2 pages. Include education, work experience (chronological, most recent first), language skills (including proficiency level), and computer skills.

Cover letter: Expected

Language: Slovak language is expected for most positions. In Bratislava, English is required in IT, finance, and multinational companies — many positions at Bratislava-based shared service centres and tech companies operate primarily in English. German is highly valued given the proximity to Austria and the strong Austrian/German investment in Slovakia (Volkswagen, Bosch, Samsung). Hungarian is useful in southern Slovakia.

Interviews: Professional, moderately formal. Arrive on time. Suit or smart business attire for first interviews. Hierarchical structures remain in traditional Slovak companies — show respect for seniority. Multinational companies in Bratislava have adopted more casual interview processes. Multiple interview rounds (sometimes 3+) are common for professional roles. Ask informed questions about the role and company.
