Vatican City citizenship is one of the most unusual statuses in international law. There are approximately 450 lay citizens and approximately 350 ecclesiastical citizens (clergy) at any time. Cardinals of the Roman Curia residing in Vatican City, the Gendarmerie command, Swiss Guard, and senior Governorate departments are the primary citizen groups. Citizenship confers a Vatican City passport — one of the most exclusive travel documents in the world, held by only ~800 people. On losing citizenship (retirement/employment end), holders revert to their nationality of origin and must use their national passport. Vatican citizenship does not extinguish home nationality — it coexists alongside it.

Swiss Guard Service — Vatican Citizenship
Eligibility
All serving Swiss Guard members receive Vatican City citizenship for the duration of their service, plus dependent family status for spouse and children.

Swiss Guard members hold dual citizenship — Swiss nationality plus Vatican City citizenship during service. On discharge, Vatican citizenship lapses; Swiss citizenship is retained. The Vatican passport is one of the most secure in the world and enables diplomatic-quality travel for serving Guards.

Vatican employees who have lived in Italy (Rome) for 10 years may apply for Italian citizenship through standard Italian naturalisation. EU citizens: 4 years of Italian residence. Non-EU citizens: 10 years. Citizens of former Italian colonial territories: 5 years.
