Cost: No formal recognition fees within Vatican process. Apostille and translation costs in home country: €50–300 depending on document volume and country. Sworn Italian translation (asseverazione): €30–80 per page from a certified Italian translator.
Academic Degrees
Authority: For Italian professional activities (Partita IVA, employment in Italy): Italian recognition is handled by CIMEA (Centro di Informazione sulla Mobilità e le Equivalenze Accademiche, cimea.it) or through the relevant professional Order. For ecclesiastical and theological degrees: Congregation for Catholic Education (dicastero vaticano) sets standards; Pontifical universities confer recognised degrees. A degree from the Pontifical Gregoriana University or Pontifical Lateran University is internationally recognised in the Catholic academic world.
Process: For Italian professional use: submit degree to CIMEA for a Dichiarazione di valore (declaration of value) — a statement of comparative academic level. Cost: €50–200. For Italian regulated professions (medicine, engineering, law), apply to the relevant Italian Ordine professionale with CIMEA assessment. For Vatican ecclesiastical roles: direct assessment by the relevant dicastery.
Equivalency service: CIMEA Dichiarazione di Valore — issued by Italian CIMEA or by the Italian embassy in your home country. The most widely accepted equivalency statement for Italian purposes.
Document Rules
Apostille: Apostille under the 1961 Hague Convention accepted by both Vatican and Italian authorities for all documents from member states. Request from the authority that issued the document (Ministry of Education or Foreign Affairs in your home country). Most EU countries, USA, UK, Australia, and 120+ others are Hague members.
