Vatican City (VA)
Vatican City — the Holy See — is the world's smallest independent state and the spiritual centre of the Roman Catholic Church.
Visa & Immigration
Entry and residence options for Vatican City.
✈️ Visa-Free Access
Vatican City does not operate an independent immigration system for tourist visitors. It is accessible as part of Italy and the Schengen Area — anyone who can enter Italy can visit Vatican City as a tourist. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens enter freely. Citizens of Schengen-associated countries and most OECD nations enter Italy (and therefore Vatican City) visa-free for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. For the purposes of expat residence and employment, Vatican City has no tourist visa of its own — residency rights derive entirely from Holy See employment appointment.
Vatican City immigration is sui generis — there is no public immigration system. The sole pathway to residence is institutional appointment. All workers — whether the Pope's personal secretary, a Swiss Guard, a Vatican Library curator, or an administrative coordinator — are appointed through Holy See processes, not through a public visa application. Expelled or terminated employees lose Vatican residence rights immediately and must leave Vatican territory. Italian legal status (for those living in Rome) must be independently maintained through Italian channels. For guidance on appointment processes, contact the Segreteria di Stato (Secretariat of State) or the relevant Vatican dicastery.
