Digital Services
Digital ID, e-government and essential apps in Vatican City.
SPID (Italian Digital Identity) + Vatican Identity Card
Vatican City does not issue a national digital identity in the conventional sense. Within Vatican territory, the physical Vatican tessera di riconoscimento (identity card) is the primary credential. For Italian digital services (INPS, Agenzia delle Entrate, INAIL, Rome municipal services), Vatican employees living in Rome use the Italian SPID (Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale) — Italy's national digital identity system. SPID is essential for accessing any Italian government digital service.
How to get it: SPID: apply with any certified identity provider (Poste Italiane via PosteID is the simplest — visit any Poste Italiane branch or use the app for video verification). You need: Italian Codice Fiscale, valid passport or Italian residence permit (permesso di soggiorno or EU registration), email address, Italian phone number. SPID is free and can be activated within 1 week. CIE (Carta di Identità Elettronica): Italian residents can request it from the Comune di Roma — €16.79, requires appointment, ready in 6 working days.
E-Government Portal
https://www.governo.itVatican City has no equivalent of Italy's digital government infrastructure — Vatican administration remains paper and in-person based internally. Most Vatican employee interactions with Vatican HR, DAAS health service, and Governorate departments are conducted face-to-face or via Vatican internal email. For all Italian interactions, SPID is the key — obtain it in your first month in Rome.

Vatican employees with sensitive roles should be conscious of digital security: use Signal for personal encrypted messaging, use Vatican IT-approved systems for work communications, and be aware of social engineering attempts targeting high-profile Vatican staff.
