📅 General Timeline
3 months before: give formal notice to Vatican HR per your contract terms; give notice on Rome apartment if applicable; begin arranging onward health insurance. 2 months before: notify Italian utility providers; arrange mail forwarding. 1 month before: close or transfer Italian bank accounts as needed; collect Vatican employment cessation documents; close Partita IVA if applicable. Last week: surrender Vatican identity card to Gendarmerie; deregister Italian residence at Comune di Roma; read meters; hand in keys to Governorate housing office; collect any outstanding Vatican pharmacy prescriptions. Deregistration
Vatican City: notify the Governorate HR office (Ufficio del Personale) of your departure in writing. Your Vatican identity card must be surrendered on the last day of employment. Access to Vatican territory — including employee facilities (pharmacy, supermarket, canteen) — ends immediately on cessation of employment. If you hold Vatican City citizenship (functional citizenship), this lapses automatically on departure from service. Italy (for Rome residents): deregister Italian residence (cancellazione anagrafica) at the Comune di Roma (Ufficio Anagrafe). Required to avoid continued Italian administrative obligations. Bring passport, Italian ID card, and your Vatican employment cessation letter.
Tax clearance
Vatican City: no income tax was paid, so there is no tax clearance requirement from Vatican authorities. Obtain a formal employment cessation letter (certificato di cessazione rapporto di lavoro) from Vatican HR for your records. Italy: if you were Italian tax-registered and had Italian-source income (e.g. freelance Partita IVA), file your final Italian Dichiarazione dei Redditi and close your Partita IVA with the Agenzia delle Entrate. Home country: if you are subject to worldwide taxation in your home country (particularly US citizens), the end of Vatican employment may affect your foreign income exclusion calculations — consult your home-country tax advisor.
Pension portability
Holy See Pension Fund (APSA-administered): your Vatican pension accrual is held in the Holy See fund. If you leave before vesting (typically 10 years for full entitlement), partial accrued benefits may be claimable at retirement age or subject to lump-sum settlement per Vatican pension regulations. Request a pension statement (estratto pensionistico) from the Holy See Pension Office before departure. The Vatican pension is not transferable to Italian INPS or EU pension systems. Health insurance
Vatican Health Service (DAAS) access ends on the last day of employment. If you have ongoing medical treatment, arrange transfer of medical records (cartella clinica) from the Vatican Health Service before leaving.
Bank account
Vatican employees typically bank in Italy. You may keep your Italian bank account after leaving — useful for receiving any final Vatican payments or pension amounts. Notify your bank of your change of address. Transfer funds internationally via Wise or Revolut for best rates. Close Italian bank accounts you no longer need (Italian bank account dormancy fees may apply after 12 months of inactivity). Retrieve your Italian IBAN for final payroll coordination.
Utilities
Employees living within Vatican walls: utilities managed by Governorate, cease automatically on departure from Vatican housing. Employees living in Rome: cancel Italian utility contracts (Acea electricity/water, Italgas gas) with the required notice (usually 30 days for residential contracts). Cancel TIM/Fastweb/Vodafone broadband (minimum 30 days notice; some contracts have penalties for early termination). Read all meters on final day. Cancel Italian mobile contract or transfer to a SIM valid in your destination country.
Rental contract
Vatican housing: occupancy is tied to employment — you must vacate Vatican residential accommodation on the agreed departure date (typically 30–90 days after end of employment, at Governorate discretion). Rome rental: standard Italian rental law requires minimum 6-month notice for unfurnished apartments (contratto 4+4) or as per your contract terms (contratto transitorio/abitativo). You may transfer your lease to another Vatican employee — inform the Governorate HR office who may assist with connections to incoming staff. Request your Italian security deposit (deposito cauzionale, typically 2–3 months rent) refund within 30 days of handover.
