Tax registration
Register for a TIC at the Tax Department. For VAT: register if turnover exceeds €15,600/year. Voluntary VAT registration is allowed and useful for B2B businesses that want to reclaim input VAT.
VAT threshold
€15,600 annual turnover (2026). Below this threshold: exempt from charging VAT (but cannot reclaim input VAT). Voluntary registration available.
Invoicing
Invoices must include: your full name/business name, TIC, VAT number (if VAT registered), invoice number, date, description of services, amount, VAT amount (if applicable), and total. Software like QuickBooks, FreeAgent, Zoho or local accounting software used.
Social security
Self-employed pay both employee and employer Social Insurance contributions (total 15.6% in 2026: 8.8% SI + 2.65% GESY employee + 4.15% employer-equivalent). Contributions based on declared income with a minimum contribution floor.
💡 Cyprus is one of Europe's most favourable jurisdictions for freelancers and digital nomads due to the Non-Dom status, low personal income tax (0% up to €19,500), and 60-day residency rule. Many international contractors structure their work through a Cyprus Ltd rather than as sole traders to maximise tax efficiency.
