Cyprus (CY)
Cyprus is a Mediterranean island nation and EU member state situated at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa.
Insurance Guide
Which insurances you actually need in Cyprus, prioritised.
Cyprus has a mixed insurance market with both local and international insurers operating. GESY contributions are mandatory for all residents and provide healthcare. Motor insurance is legally required. Other insurances are voluntary but strongly recommended. The Insurance Companies Control Service (ICCS) regulates the industry.
Legally Mandatory
- - GESY health contributions (mandatory for all residents)
- - Social Insurance contributions (mandatory for employed persons)
- - Motor third-party liability insurance (mandatory for all vehicles)
GESY Health Contribution
Mandatory contribution funding the General Healthcare System. Not a separate insurance product — deducted at source from salary.
Who needs it: All residents with employment or self-employment income. Pensioners and others pay a flat rate.
Annual cost: 2.65% of gross salary for employees
Covers most healthcare needs. Consider supplementary private insurance for faster access.
Motor Third-Party Liability Insurance
Mandatory insurance covering third-party injury and property damage caused by your vehicle.
Who needs it: Every vehicle owner or driver in Cyprus.
Annual cost: €250–600/year depending on vehicle age, driver age, and insurer.
Minimum required by law. Comprehensive (fully comprehensive) insurance recommended for newer vehicles.
Building Insurance (Property)
Covers structural damage to the property from fire, earthquake, flood, and similar events.
Who needs it: Property owners (mandatory if you have a mortgage).
Annual cost: €200–600/year depending on property value
Cyprus has a history of earthquakes (minor to moderate). Earthquake coverage is particularly important and is often included as standard.
Comprehensive Motor Insurance
Covers own vehicle damage in addition to third-party liability. Includes theft, fire, and collision.
Who needs it: Drivers with newer or higher-value vehicles.
Annual cost: €500–1,200/year
Strongly recommended for vehicles worth over €5,000. Many insurers offer NCB (no-claims bonus) transfers from other countries.
Home Contents Insurance
Covers personal belongings against theft, fire, and water damage in your home.
Who needs it: All renters and homeowners.
Annual cost: €80–200/year
Landlords often require contents insurance. Separate from building insurance (which is the landlord's responsibility).
Private Health Insurance (Top-Up)
Supplementary health insurance providing faster access to private specialists, private hospital rooms, and broader coverage than GESY.
Who needs it: Anyone who wants faster specialist access or private hospital treatment.
Annual cost: €1,200–4,000/year depending on age and coverage level
Most useful for accessing private hospitals and specialists without waiting for GESY referrals. Some employers include this as a benefit.
Life Insurance
Pays a lump sum or income to dependants on death. Term life, whole life or investment-linked.
Who needs it: Adults with dependants, mortgage holders.
Annual cost: €300–1,000/year (term life, healthy adult)
Mortgage lenders typically require life insurance. Cyprus has a mature life insurance market with many options.
Travel Insurance
Covers medical emergencies, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and repatriation while travelling outside Cyprus.
Who needs it: Anyone travelling internationally, especially outside the EU.
Annual cost: €60–200/year (annual multi-trip policy)
Cyprus residents are EU residents and have EHIC for EU travel. Travel insurance is essential for non-EU countries and for comprehensive cancellation protection. Check your credit card for included travel insurance — some premium cards include it.
Comparison sites
Bundle home and motor insurance with the same provider for discounts (typically 10–15% off).
Cyprus earthquake risk is real — ensure property insurance includes earthquake coverage.
Transfer your no-claims history from your previous country when getting motor insurance.
GESY is mandatory but private health top-up is worth the modest cost for faster access.
