Leaving Cyprus
How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
3 months before: give notice to landlord, notify employer, begin tax clearance. 6–8 weeks before: close or redirect bank account, notify GESY, cancel subscriptions. 4 weeks before: cancel utilities, arrange pet export documentation if applicable, notify municipality (dog licence). 1–2 weeks before: final tax return filing or ensure next return is scheduled, notify pension fund, confirm social insurance record. After departure: follow up on tax clearance, pension portability transfer, and deposit return.
Deregistration
There is no mandatory formal deregistration from Cyprus when you leave. However, you should: (1) Notify the Civil Registry and Migration Department (CRMD) if you are surrendering your residence permit. (2) Notify the Tax Department (Τμήμα Φορολογίας) of your change of tax residency — file a change of address/status form. (3) Notify the Social Insurance Services if you are no longer employed or self-employed. (4) Notify your municipality if you had a dog licence. Keep records of your departure date for tax purposes.
Tax clearance
Obtain a tax clearance certificate from the Tax Department if required (particularly for selling property or closing a company). Ensure all tax returns are filed and all tax owed is paid before leaving. Seek advice from a tax accountant — early departure can trigger transitional tax obligations. If you held Non-Dom status, the 17-year clock continues in absentia if you later return to Cyprus.
Pension portability
Cypriot Social Insurance contributions are portable within EU member states under EU Regulation 883/2004. Periods of contribution in Cyprus count toward pension entitlement in your next EU country of residence (and vice versa). For non-EU countries, portability depends on bilateral Social Security agreements Cyprus has with that country. Contact the Social Insurance Services (Υπηρεσίες Κοινωνικών Ασφαλίσεων) for a statement of your contribution record before leaving.
Health insurance
GESY coverage ends when you cease to be tax-resident in Cyprus or lose your qualifying status. Notify GESY of your departure. Ensure you have health insurance for your new country before cancelling GESY. EU citizens moving to another EU country will be covered by their new country's system after re-registration. Bring your EU Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if moving temporarily to another EU country.
Bank account
You are not required to close your Cyprus bank account when leaving. Many expats maintain a Cyprus account for receiving EU payments, managing Cyprus investments, or for future return visits. Ensure you meet ongoing KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements — banks may ask for updated address and residence proof annually. Revolut and digital banks can serve as alternatives.
Utilities
Cancel or transfer EAC electricity, water board, and internet contracts with final meter readings. Give appropriate notice per your contract (usually 1–4 weeks). Request final bills and keep records. If you own property and are renting it, arrange for utilities to be transferred to your tenant or property manager.
Rental contract
Give notice per your contract terms. Cyprus standard residential contracts typically require 1–3 months notice. Request a written exit inspection (Έλεγχος Εξόδου) with the landlord to document the property condition. Deposit should be returned within 2–4 weeks of departure. If there are disputes, the Rent Control Tribunals (Δικαστήριο Ελέγχου Ενοικίων) have jurisdiction.
