Consumer Rights
Right of withdrawal, contracts and debt collection in Cyprus.
Cyprus implements all EU consumer protection directives, providing strong rights for online purchases, service contracts, and product warranties. The Competition and Consumer Protection Service (Υπηρεσία Ανταγωνισμού και Προστασίας Καταναλωτών — CCPS) enforces consumer rights. English is widely used for consumer communications.
Right of withdrawal (Widerrufsrecht)
14 calendar days to cancel any distance (online/phone) purchase or door-to-door sale without reason, under EU Directive 2011/83/EU implemented in Cyprus. The return period starts from the day you receive goods. For services: 14 days from contract signing. Exceptions: perishable goods, personalised items, digital downloads once started.
Contract cancellation
Gym, subscription, and telecoms contracts can be cancelled on the terms specified in the agreement. Under EU law, automatic renewals must be explicitly disclosed. If not clearly disclosed, you may have additional cancellation rights. Give notice in writing (email is acceptable). Keep proof of cancellation notice.
Under EU rules implemented in Cyprus, businesses must clearly notify you before auto-renewal of a subscription or service contract. If a contract auto-renews without proper notice, you may cancel without penalty. Broadband and mobile contracts: typically 12–24 month initial term, then monthly rolling. Gym contracts: specify minimum term clearly.
Debt collection — response deadlines
Informal reminders: First: informal written reminders (payment demands). Cyprus companies typically send 1–3 reminder letters before escalating.
Court order: Court application for a payment order (Διαταγή Πληρωμής). Court may issue judgment without a hearing if claim is undisputed.
Response deadline: 15 days from service of a payment order to respond/contest.
