Family Rights & Benefits
Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Cyprus.
Cyprus implements EU family and parental rights directives. Both parents have statutory rights to maternity, paternity and parental leave. Benefits are administered through the Social Insurance Services. The Welfare Services (Υπηρεσίες Κοινωνικής Ευημερίας) handles child benefit, single-parent support, and child protection.
Maternity Leave (Άδεια Μητρότητας)
Before birth: At least 2 weeks compulsory before the expected birth date (must be taken no later than 2 weeks before the expected week of birth).
After birth: First and second childbirths: 22 consecutive weeks total maternity leave. Third and subsequent childbirths: 26 weeks total. At least 11 weeks of leave must be taken starting no later than 2 weeks before the expected birth week.
Job protection: Dismissal during maternity leave is automatically unfair. The mother is protected from dismissal for up to 6 months after return from maternity leave.
Parental Leave (Γονική Άδεια)
Max duration: 18 weeks unpaid parental leave per child per parent, usable until the child reaches 8 years old. Can be taken in full blocks or weekly/monthly portions depending on employer agreement.
Split rules / Elterngeld: Each parent is entitled individually to 18 weeks. It is not transferable between parents. Both parents can use their entitlement concurrently if they work for different employers.
Benefits
Maternity Allowance
72% of average weekly insured earnings for the qualifying period (increases to 80% with 1 dependant, 90% with 2, 100% with 3+). Birth grant: €1,000 (1st child), €1,500 (2nd), €2,000 (3rd), €2,500 (4th+).
Duration: 22 weeks (1st/2nd child); 26 weeks (3rd+ child)
Eligibility: Employed mothers who have paid at least 16 weeks of Social Insurance contributions before the start of maternity leave.
How to apply: Apply to Social Insurance Services (Υπηρεσίες Κοινωνικών Ασφαλίσεων) within 4 weeks of starting maternity leave.
Self-employed mothers are also eligible if SI contributions are up to date.
Paternity Leave Allowance
75% of average weekly insured earnings
Duration: 2 weeks
Eligibility: Fathers employed and contributing to Social Insurance.
How to apply: Apply to Social Insurance Services. Must be taken within 16 weeks of the child's birth.
Child Benefit (Παιδικό Επίδομα)
Means-tested. Up to €475/year per child (varies by income and number of children)
Duration: Per year until child reaches 18 (23 if in full-time education)
Eligibility: All Cyprus residents with children. Income-tested — higher income = lower benefit.
How to apply: Apply via Social Welfare Services (Υπηρεσίες Κοινωνικής Ευημερίας) or online.
All employed parents can apply regardless of nationality, provided they have legal residence in Cyprus.
Single Parent Benefit
Varies based on income assessment
Duration: Ongoing while eligible
Eligibility: Single parents (divorced, separated, widowed, or never married) with dependent children.
How to apply: Apply to Social Welfare Services with documentation of single parent status.
Minimum Guaranteed Income (EEE)
Up to €870/month for a single adult household (including rent allowance — 2026)
Duration: Ongoing while eligible
Eligibility: Low-income households who meet residency and means-test criteria.
How to apply: Apply at Social Welfare Services. Comprehensive means testing required.
EEE (Ελάχιστο Εγγυημένο Εισόδημα) replaced the previous social benefits system in 2014. Covers housing, food and basic needs.
Sick child leave
Parents can take leave to care for a sick child. No separate statutory sick child leave exists as a distinct right — parents may use their own sick leave with a doctor's note for the child. Some collective agreements provide additional provisions. Check your employment contract.
Birth registration
All births must be registered at the Civil Registry Office (Γραφείο Ληξιαρχείου) within 10 days. Both parents must attend if unmarried. Required documents: hospital birth certificate, parents' passports, and marriage certificate (if married). The child receives a Cypriot birth certificate (Πιστοποιητικό Γέννησης) and, if born in Cyprus, may be eligible for citizenship.
Childcare rights
All children from age 3 have a right to public kindergarten. State-subsidised creche/nursery places are available through Welfare Services for children under 3 in working families — apply early as demand exceeds supply. The Human Resource Development Authority (ANAD) funds employer-provided childcare support in some circumstances.
