Activate your e-Boks account immediately after getting CPR

e-Boks is Denmark's mandatory digital post system. Under the Digital Post Act, all official government communications — from SKAT (tax), Udbetaling Danmark (benefits), SIRI (immigration), kommunen, and all public authorities — are sent exclusively to your e-Boks. Communications sent to your e-Boks are legally considered received even if you do not read them. Failing to activate and check e-Boks regularly can result in missed tax deadlines, benefit decisions, and immigration correspondence you never knew existed.

Set up MitID (Danish digital identity)

MitID is Denmark's digital identity and authentication system, which replaced NemID in November 2022. You need MitID to access e-Boks, SKAT (tax portal), Borger.dk, online banking, and virtually every Danish digital service. MitID uses an app with biometric authentication or a code display device. Without MitID you cannot access almost any digital government service in Denmark.

Register change of address in the Civil Registration System (CPR) within 5 days

Danish law requires registering any address change in the CPR system within 5 days. Do this at your local Borgerservice or online at borger.dk. Your CPR number and national health card (sundhedskort) are updated automatically. Non-compliance can result in loss of benefits and fines.

Register at the municipality (kommunen) and get your CPR number

Register your address at your local municipality (kommunen) within 5 days of moving in. This registers you in the Central Person Register (CPR) and gives you a CPR number (personnummer) — your 10-digit Danish identification number. The CPR number is the most important document in Denmark: without it you cannot open a bank account, receive a salary, access healthcare, obtain MitID, or use almost any government service.

Register your address in folkeregisteret (and update when you move)

All Danish residents are legally required to register their current residential address in the folkeregisteret (central civil registration system). You must register a new address within 5 days of moving. Failing to update your address means official post (including from SKAT and courts) goes to the wrong address — and you are legally responsible for any decisions made based on correspondence you did not receive.

Register your Danish address in the Folkeregister within 5 days of moving

Required within 5 days of moving to a new address in Denmark. Register online at borger.dk or at local Borgerservice. Required for CPR number, voting, tax. Fine for late registration: DKK 1,000.

Register as job-seeker at your local Jobcenter

If you are unemployed and seeking work in Denmark, register at your local Jobcenter within one week. Registration is required to access dagpenge (unemployment benefit) through your a-kasse, to receive job-search assistance, and to fulfil the activity requirement that keeps benefits active. You must be registered as an active job-seeker on Jobnet.dk and apply for a minimum number of jobs per week.

Open a Danish bank account and set up NemKonto

A Danish bank account is essential for receiving your salary, paying rent, and making Danish payments. NemKonto (Easy Account) is the CPR-linked bank account that receives all government payments: tax refunds, benefits, børnecheck, and state disbursements. When you open a bank account, you register it as your NemKonto at borger.dk — the state automatically uses it for all payments to you.

Register at SKAT and check your skattekort (tax card)

Register with SKAT (Skattestyrelsen) at skat.dk and review your skattekort (tax card). The skattekort shows your trækprocent (withholding rate) and fradrag (deductions) — your employer uses it to calculate the correct tax to withhold from your salary each month. An incorrect skattekort means either too much or too little tax is withheld. If you qualify for the Forskerskatteordningen (27% flat expat tax), register for this within the first weeks of starting work.

EU/EEA citizens: register your right of residence at SIRI

EU/EEA citizens staying in Denmark for more than 3 months must register their right of residence with SIRI (Styrelsen for International Rekruttering og Integration). You receive a registration certificate (registreringsbevis) which is required for access to many services and is evidence of your legal residence. Registration is free and takes around 2 weeks processing.

Set up your e-Boks digital mailbox for all government correspondence

e-Boks is the mandatory digital mailbox for all Danish residents. Within weeks of CPR registration, you are automatically enrolled. Government agencies, banks, and utilities send legally binding letters here. Opting out is possible but not recommended. Set up the e-Boks app and NemID/MitID authentication for immediate access.

Verify ATP pension contributions are being deducted from your salary

ATP is Denmark's mandatory supplementary pension scheme. Employers are legally required to deduct ATP contributions from all employees working more than 9 hours per week. Check your first payslip to confirm the deduction appears. You can also verify your total ATP savings at minside.atp.dk using your NemID/MitID.

Register and comply with Danish pet import requirements

If bringing a pet to Denmark: dogs and cats need a microchip, rabies vaccination, and EU pet passport (or equivalent documentation from non-EU countries). Dogs entering Denmark must have received an Echinococcus (tapeworm) treatment from a vet 1–5 days before entry — this is a Denmark-specific requirement not required by all EU countries. Certain dog breeds are banned in Denmark (including Pitbull Terrier, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Boerboel).

Register your dog in the Danish dog register (Dansk Hunderegister)

All dogs in Denmark must be microchipped and registered in the Dansk Hunderegister (DHR) within 4 weeks of arrival or at 4 months of age. Registration costs DKK 150 (~€20). Some dog breeds (e.g., pit bulls, tosa inu) are banned in Denmark. Dog insurance is strongly recommended. EU pet passport required for animals arriving from abroad.

Confirm ATP enrollment and check occupational pension with employer

ATP (Arbejdsmarkedets Tillægspension) is a mandatory supplementary pension scheme for all employed persons in Denmark. Your employer enrolls you automatically and deducts the employee contribution (DKK 94.65/month for full-time, DKK 1,135.80/year) from your salary, with the employer contributing DKK 189.30/month (DKK 2,271.60/year). Additionally, most employment contracts include an occupational pension (arbejdspension) — typically 10–17% of salary split between employee and employer. Confirm these are set up correctly with your HR or payroll department.

File your annual selvangivelse (tax return) by 1 May

The Danish årsopgørelse (annual tax statement) is automatically prepared by SKAT based on employer and third-party data. Most salaried employees do not need to file anything — SKAT's automatic statement is typically correct. However, you must review it and make corrections if needed (e.g., deductible transport costs, private pension contributions, additional income). The deadline to review and make changes is 1 May. The årsopgørelse becomes final after that date.

Join an a-kasse (unemployment insurance fund) within 2 weeks of starting employment

A-kasse (arbejdsløshedskasse) membership is voluntary in Denmark, but you can only receive dagpenge (unemployment benefit) if you have been a member for at least 12 months and meet the work requirement. Join as soon as you start employment — the 12-month qualifying clock starts from the day you join. If you become unemployed before 12 months, you are not entitled to dagpenge and must rely on kontanthjælp (means-tested welfare) instead. A-kasse membership costs DKK 400–600/month depending on the fund.

Notify your home pension provider of your move to Denmark

If you receive a pension from your home country, notify your pension provider of your new Danish address immediately. Ensure your pension payments can be redirected to your Danish bank account. Many EU pension authorities require an annual proof-of-life certificate — register for this service early. Denmark has double tax treaties with all EU/EEA states and many other countries. Foreign pension income must be declared in your Danish selvangivelse (tax return) — SKAT receives CRS reporting from foreign banks and pension administrators. Danish marginal tax on pension income can reach 55.9% — treaty planning is critical.

Apply for Forskerskatteordningen (27% flat expat tax) if eligible

The Forskerskatteordningen (researcher/specialist tax scheme) allows qualifying foreign specialists and researchers to pay a flat 27% tax rate (instead of the standard 37–55.9% marginal rates) for up to 7 years. To qualify you must: (1) be recruited from abroad, (2) not have been a Danish tax resident in the 10 years before employment, (3) earn above the monthly minimum salary threshold (approximately DKK 75,100 gross/month in 2026). Apply through your employer via SKAT as soon as you start work.

Join Sygeforsikringen "Danmark" within 6 months of CPR registration

Sygeforsikringen "Danmark" is a voluntary supplementary health insurance scheme that subsidises dental care, physiotherapy, glasses, and other services not covered by the free public healthcare system. You must join within 6 months of registering in Denmark to avoid a waiting period for benefits. Membership costs approximately DKK 230–570/month depending on the group (Group 1 basic, Group 2 includes dental). Particularly recommended for dental coverage — adult dentistry is NOT covered by the public system.

Set up MobilePay

MobilePay is Denmark's ubiquitous mobile payment app, used by over 90% of the Danish population. It is used to split bills, pay at many local shops, pay rent, donate to charities, and transfer money between people. Without MobilePay you will find it genuinely difficult to participate fully in Danish social and financial life.

Set up Betalingsservice (automatic bill payment)

Betalingsservice is Denmark's standard automatic bill payment system, run by Nets. The vast majority of recurring Danish bills — utilities, insurance, subscriptions, municipal payments, a-kasse, union fees — are paid via Betalingsservice (similar to direct debit). Once set up, your service providers pull payments automatically from your bank account on the payment date. Managing your mandates is done at betalingsservice.dk with MitID.

Get a Danish SIM card from TDC, YouSee, or Lebara

Purchase a SIM from TDC, YouSee, 3 (Tre), or Lebara with passport or CPR number. Monthly SIM-only plans from DKK 49 (~€6.50). Coverage is excellent nationwide. E-Boks (digital mailbox linked to CPR) is also your legal postal address for government communications — set it up at e-boks.dk.

Get a Rejsekort public transport card and register with NemKonto

Purchase a Rejsekort (travel card) at train stations for discounted bus/train fares nationwide — register it for automatic top-ups. Set up NemKonto: link your bank account as the default for government payments (tax refunds, child benefits). All Danish residents with CPR are required to have a NemKonto. Register at nemkonto.dk.

Consider joining a fagforening (trade union)

Denmark's labour market is highly unionised (approximately 67% of workers are union members). Unions (fagforeninger) negotiate collective agreements (overenskomster) that set minimum wages, working conditions, and benefits across all sectors — even for non-members. Joining a union provides: legal representation in disputes, access to career services, salary negotiation guidance, and discounts. Many a-kasser are affiliated with unions but can be joined independently.

Apply for barselsdagpenge (parental leave pay) through Udbetaling Danmark

Denmark offers 24 weeks of paid parental leave per child split between parents (11 weeks each for mother/father + 2 shared). From 2024, the system gives each parent 9 non-transferable weeks to encourage equal sharing. Apply at borger.dk or Udbetaling Danmark. Daily pay: up to DKK 4,465/week (~full salary for most workers).

Apply for børnetilskud (child allowance) for children under 18

All children under 15 with CPR numbers receive quarterly børneydelse (child benefit). In 2026: DKK 4,642/quarter (~€620) for children 0–2, DKK 3,676/quarter for 3–6, DKK 2,893/quarter for 7–14. Single parents receive additional supplements. No application needed after CPR registration — paid automatically to NemKonto.

Set up budget tracking and understand Danish tax (skat) deductions

All Danish residents can view and adjust their tax card (skattekort) on skat.dk. Your employer uses your personal allowance (personfradrag) of ~DKK 49,700/year (2024 value; indexed annually — check skat.dk for current year) before tax. Set up the MitSkat app to monitor deductions, apply for deductions (transport, union fees, donations), and file your annual return. Danish taxes are among the world's highest but include extensive free services.

Do an annual January check of key financial thresholds

Every January 1st several key figures change in Denmark: minimum wages (set by collective agreements — overenskomster), ATP contribution rates, income tax brackets (personfradrag, topskat threshold), and social contribution rates. A brief annual self-audit prevents payslip surprises and missed savings opportunities.

Request your free annual credit report from Debitor Registret or Experian

Danish residents can request a free copy of their credit file from Debitor Registret (RKI — the main Danish negative credit register) once per year under GDPR. Being registered in RKI blocks access to bank accounts, phone contracts, and rentals. Experian also holds credit data and offers a free annual disclosure.

Register with a GP (praktiserende læge) and get your sundhedskort

Once you have a CPR number, register with a GP (praktiserende læge) near your home. Your GP is the gatekeeper to the Danish healthcare system — you need a referral from your GP to see specialists. Shortly after registering with a GP and the healthcare system, you will receive a yellow health card (sundhedskort) by post, listing your GP's name and contact details. Present this card when accessing healthcare.

Register with a dentist and claim tandlægetilskud (dental subsidy)

Denmark provides partial dental subsidy for adults: DKK 600–800 reimbursed annually toward dental treatment costs at any tandlæge (dentist). Not all treatments covered. Register at any private tandlæge — no referral needed.

Register for social housing waiting list immediately

Social housing (almene boliger) in Denmark — especially in Copenhagen — has a waiting list of 10–20 years. Waiting time accrues from the date you register. Registering early costs very little (DKK 200–500/year) and secures your place in the queue. Even if you are happy in private rental accommodation now, registering immediately is strongly advisable. The main Copenhagen housing associations include KAB, Domea, AAB, and KKIK.

Apply for permanent residency (tidsubegrænset opholdstilladelse) when eligible

Non-EU nationals can apply for permanent residency (tidsubegrænset opholdstilladelse) after 8 years of continuous legal residency in Denmark (reduced to 4–5 years under some conditions). Requirements include: PD2 Danish language exam (B1 minimum), demonstrated self-sufficiency, active employment, and passing a citizenship test (Medborgerskabsprøve). EU citizens acquire permanent residence after 5 years through the EU Permanent Residence Directive.

Arrange indboforsikring (home contents insurance)

Danish rental contracts typically require home contents insurance (indboforsikring). The standard package also includes ansvarsforsikring (personal liability insurance) which covers accidental damage you cause to others' property. Both are typically bundled and cost DKK 150–400/month depending on coverage level and location.

Consider setting up a ratepension or aldersopsparing

Beyond mandatory ATP and occupational pension, consider setting up a private pension savings account. Ratepension allows up to DKK 63,100/year (2026) in tax-deductible contributions. Returns are taxed at 15.3% PAL tax annually and paid out as income over at least 10 years at retirement. Aldersopsparing (up to DKK 9,400/year — no upfront tax deduction but payout is tax-free) can also supplement. These are most valuable for those in the top tax bracket during working life.

Get a bicycle and register it

Cycling is the primary mode of transport in Danish cities. Copenhagen has 390+ km of dedicated cycle lanes. A bicycle is not optional — it is a cultural necessity in Denmark. When you buy a bicycle, register it at cykelregistret.dk using the frame number — registered bikes are much easier to recover if stolen (theft rate is very high: approximately 50,000 bikes stolen in Denmark per year). Also secure your bike with at least two locks, including a heavy D-lock or chain.
