Denmark (DK)
Denmark is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy in Northern Europe — the southernmost of the Scandinavian nations — celebrated for its pioneering design aesthetic (Royal Copenhagen, Bang & Olufsen, Lego), the concept of hygge (cosiness and togetherness), the world's best work-life balance, free world-class universities, a welfare state that ranks among the globe's most generous, and Copenhagen consistently topping global rankings for sustainability, cycling infrastructure, and quality of life.
Family Rights & Benefits
Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Denmark.
Denmark has one of the world's most generous and flexible parental leave systems, generous child benefits (børnecheck), heavily subsidised childcare, and strong protections for families. The 2022 parental leave reform (barselsreform) significantly changed the system to encourage more equal sharing between parents. Benefits are administered by Udbetaling Danmark (udbetaling.dk). All benefits require CPR numbers for both parents and child.
Barselsorlov (Parental Leave)
Before birth: 4 weeks before expected birth (graviditetsorlov) — paid at barselsdagpenge rate (up to DKK 5,085/week).
After birth: Mother: 10 weeks exclusive maternity leave after birth (compulsory 2 weeks immediately after birth, then up to 8 more exclusive weeks). After the exclusive periods, 24 weeks of shared parental leave are available (see below).
Job protection: Full job protection during all parental leave periods. Dismissal during or because of pregnancy/parental leave is unlawful. Employers cannot penalise employees for taking leave.
Forældreorlov (Shared Parental Leave)
Max duration: Total parental leave per child: approximately 52 weeks. Structure (2026): Exclusive mother: 4 weeks before birth + 10 weeks after. Exclusive father/co-parent: 2 weeks "father quota" immediately after birth. Shared: 24 weeks for the parents to share (12 weeks each designated — not transferable to the other parent under 2022 reform). Additional non-paid leave possible.
Split rules / Elterngeld: The 2022 barselsreform introduced a "use it or lose it" element: each parent has 11 weeks of the shared period that CANNOT be transferred to the other parent. If a parent does not use their designated weeks, those weeks are lost. This was designed to encourage fathers to take more leave. Some weeks remain transferable. Check the current rules at borger.dk as transition rules apply.
Benefits
Parental Benefit
Up to DKK 5,085/week (2026 maximum — indexed annually). Many collective agreements top up to full salary.
Duration: Paid for up to 52 weeks across all leave periods (with exceptions).
Eligibility: Must have worked at least 160 hours in the 4 months before leave (or met self-employed criteria). Both parents can receive barselsdagpenge if eligibility is met.
How to apply: Apply via borger.dk/udbetaling-danmark within 8 weeks of birth. Both parents apply separately.
The DKK 5,085/week is the maximum from Udbetaling Danmark — many employees receive full salary from employers under their collective agreements. Self-employed receive a lower rate.
Børnecheck (Child Benefit)
Per quarter (2026 approximate): under 3 years: DKK 4,682/quarter per child; ages 3–6: DKK 3,705/quarter; ages 7–17: DKK 2,928/quarter. Paid quarterly into your NemKonto automatically.
Duration: Until the child turns 18.
Eligibility: All children resident in Denmark with a CPR number. Paid to the parent (typically the mother). Income does not affect the basic børnecheck. A higher-income supplement (børnetilskud for single parents) is also available.
How to apply: Automatic once the child is registered in the Civil Register (CPR). No separate application needed in most cases — check via borger.dk.
Børnecheck (officially: børne- og ungeydelse) is a universal benefit — not means-tested for the basic amount. Extremely valuable for families. EU citizens working in Denmark have the same entitlement as Danish citizens.
Childcare Subsidy
Municipalities subsidise at least 75% of childcare costs. Low-income families may pay DKK 0.
Duration: Until child starts school (and continued as SFO subsidy).
Eligibility: All children resident in the municipality in regulated childcare.
How to apply: Automatic when enrolled in municipal or approved private childcare. Register via pladsanvisning at your municipality's website.
The Danish childcare subsidy system is among the most generous in the world. Maximum parent payment is capped by each municipality. Sibling discount (søskenderabat): 50% off the cheapest placement.
Ekstra børnetilskud (Additional child benefit for single parents)
Approximately DKK 1,960/quarter per child in 2026 (in addition to the basic børnecheck).
Duration: Until child turns 18.
Eligibility: Single parents with sole custody or primary residence of the child.
How to apply: Apply via Udbetaling Danmark at borger.dk.
Single parents in Denmark receive significant additional support through the welfare system.
Sick child leave
Under Funktionærloven: employees are entitled to barns første sygedag (first day of sick child absence) — full paid leave for the child's first day of illness. Many collective agreements extend this to multiple days. Beyond the first day, paid leave depends on the collective agreement. Some agreements provide up to 5 days per year for sick child leave.
Birth registration
Children born in Denmark must be registered in the Civil Register (CPR) within 14 days of birth. This is normally done automatically by the hospital (digital birth notification). After registration, the child receives a CPR number and the parents are notified. The birth certificate is also issued digitally.
Childcare rights
Every child in Denmark has a legal right to a place in municipal childcare from the age of 26 weeks (6 months). The municipality must guarantee a place within 3 months of application. The pladsanvisning (municipal childcare allocation office) manages this. Parents can specify preferences but must accept the offered place or lose priority.
