Denmark has a structured system for recognising foreign professional qualifications and academic degrees. EU/EEA professionals in regulated occupations benefit from EU Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications. Non-EU qualifications follow national recognition processes. The key authority depends on the profession: Styrelsen for Patientsikkerhed (Danish Patient Safety Authority — stps.dk) for healthcare, Uddannelses- og Forskningsstyrelsen (Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science — ufsn.dk) for academic degrees, and sector-specific authorities for other regulated professions.
Regulated Professions
Process: 1. Identify the competent authority for your profession (see above). 2. Gather your qualification documents (diplomas, transcripts, evidence of professional experience). 3. Have documents apostilled and translated into Danish if required. 4. Submit the application to the relevant authority. 5. The authority assesses whether your qualification is equivalent to the Danish standard. 6. You may need to pass an aptitude test or complete a period of supervised practice. 7. If approved, you receive your Danish authorisation.

Uddannelses- og Forskningsstyrelsen (Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science — ufsn.dk / ufm.dk) for academic qualifications (also Denmark's ENIC/NARIC centre). Timeline: 1–6 months depending on profession and completeness of application. Healthcare professions: 3–6 months. Academic degrees: up to 2 months (typically 4–8 weeks).
Cost: Academic degree assessment by Uddannelses- og Forskningsstyrelsen: FREE of charge (assessment is provided at no cost; translation costs are borne by the applicant). Healthcare professional authorisation: DKK 2,000–5,000. Translation costs: DKK 200–500 per page for certified translations.
Academic Degrees
Authority: Uddannelses- og Forskningsstyrelsen (Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science — ufsn.dk). This agency is Denmark's official ENIC/NARIC centre and handles all academic degree assessments. The parent ministry is Uddannelses- og Forskningsministeriet (ufm.dk). Contact: vur@ufm.dk.
Process: Submit your diploma and transcripts to Uddannelses- og Forskningsstyrelsen via the online application at ufm.dk/en/education/recognition-and-transparency/get-assessment. Provide certified translations in Danish or English. The agency issues a statement of comparability (sammenligning) showing what Danish level your foreign degree corresponds to and, where possible, the field of study. Assessment is free of charge and normally takes up to 2 months from receipt of complete documentation.
Equivalency service: Uddannelses- og Forskningsstyrelsen (ufsn.dk) is the official ENIC/NARIC Denmark service. The comparability statement is used for job applications, further study admission, and professional recognition. For EU degrees, an automatic comparability statement is often possible. For non-EU degrees, more documentation is required.
Document Rules
Apostille: Documents from Hague Apostille Convention countries should bear an apostille stamp. Denmark is a member of the Convention. Most official educational and civil status documents need apostilling for use in Danish official processes.
Legalisation: For documents from countries NOT party to the Apostille Convention: legalisation through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country, then Danish embassy or consulate stamp. Contact the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (um.dk) for specific requirements.
Sworn translation: Translations into Danish must be made by a translatør og tolk (sworn/certified translator) for official use. Approved translators are listed at domstol.dk/translatorer. Translations into English are also often accepted by Danish authorities. Typical cost: DKK 200–500 per standard page.

Denmark actively recruits international talent but requires proper recognition for regulated professions. For non-regulated professions, employer recognition is informal and based on demonstrated competence. Danish language skills significantly improve the recognition process and job prospects. Engineers (ingeniør) are not a strictly regulated profession in Denmark (no mandatory registration) but IDA (the Danish Society of Engineers) offers voluntary professional registration.
