Leaving Denmark

How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.

General Timeline

Recommended timeline for leaving Denmark: 3 months before — give notice on rental contract, arrange housing in destination, begin pension portability process. 2 months before — notify employer (observe notice period), notify a-kasse if member. 1 month before — notify utilities, bank, insurance providers. 2 weeks before — notify SKAT of departure, arrange final tax affairs. On departure — deregister at folkeregisteret (borgerservice). After departure — file final Danish tax return for the year of departure (deadline: 1 July of following year for the year you left). Keep all Danish documents for at least 5 years.

Deregistration

When leaving Denmark, you must officially deregister (afmelde) from the folkeregisteret at your local borgerservice. This is mandatory — failure to deregister means you remain registered as a Danish resident, with potential tax and administrative consequences. Deregistration should be done within 5 days of leaving. After deregistration, your CPR number remains linked to your identity but your Danish residence registration ends. Do this online at borger.dk or in person at borgerservice.

Tax clearance

Inform SKAT (skat.dk) that you are leaving Denmark — change your skattemæssigt hjemsted (tax domicile). You will need to file a final Danish tax return (fraflytningsopgørelse — departure tax assessment) for the year you leave, covering the portion of the year you were resident. Danish tax on accrued but unrealised gains (exitskat) may apply to business assets and some investments when leaving Denmark. Consult a tax advisor. If you owe tax, pay it before leaving. If you have a refund outstanding, your NemKonto bank account must remain active.

Pension portability

ATP (Arbejdsmarkedets Tillægspension) is yours regardless of where you move — you retain the accumulated rights. Benefits are payable from age 65 (or 67 for those in the newer scheme) wherever you live. Contact ATP (atp.dk) to update your contact details and banking information when leaving. Occupational pension (arbejdspension): contact your pension provider (PFA, Danica, etc.) — rights remain yours. Transfer to another EU pension scheme is possible under the IORP Directive. Private pension: contact provider. Important: there is no refund of pension contributions if you leave before retirement age.

Health insurance

Danish healthcare (sundhedsvæsenet) access ends upon deregistration from the folkeregisteret. You lose your yellow health card and GP registration. Ensure you have health insurance coverage in your destination country from the day you leave. If you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), check its validity period — it expires and is not automatically renewed after you leave Denmark. Arrange coverage before departure.

Bank account

Your Danish bank account can generally remain open after leaving, useful for receiving any final salary, tax refunds, or pension payments. Inform your bank of your departure and updated address. Note that your NemKonto must remain active to receive tax refunds and state payments. Some banks may close accounts if they lose contact. Wise and Revolut accounts have no such restrictions. Close the account formally when you are certain no further Danish payments are due.

Utilities

Notify all utility providers of your departure date and request final readings. Cancel electricity (el), heating (varme), and internet contracts in writing, observing any notice periods. Request a final bill. Cancel any direct debit authorisations (betalingsservice) you will no longer need. Return any rented equipment (router, etc.).

Rental contract

Give the required notice to your landlord (standard: 1 calendar month for tenants). This must be in writing (email or registered letter). Arrange a final inspection (fraflytningssyn) with your landlord. Document the condition of the property with photographs. Ensure your depositum (deposit — up to 3 months) and forudbetalt husleje (prepaid rent) are returned within 14 days of the tenancy ending. Disputes go to Huslejenævnet (rental tribunal).
