EU citizens do not need a formal permanent residence permit — they have permanent residence rights under EU law after 5 years of continuous residence; apply for an EU permanent residence certificate at SIRI. For non-EU nationals: a 4-year fast-track is available if all four integration criteria are met simultaneously: (1) income above a threshold, (2) Prøve i Dansk 2 or higher language level, (3) at least 3.5 years of full-time work in the past 5 years, and (4) civic participation. Meeting some but not all four criteria reduces the 8-year requirement proportionally.

Danish citizenship by naturalisation is granted by Act of Parliament (Lov om indfødsret) — passed approximately twice per year. Applications are submitted to the Ministry of Immigration and Integration. The process takes 1–3 years from application to ceremony. 2026 status: Denmark froze processing of virtually all citizenship applications on March 9, 2026, ahead of the general election on March 24, 2026; the freeze continues while a new government forms and negotiates revised criteria (expected mid-to-late 2026). The mandatory handshake (håndtryk) at the citizenship ceremony is set to expire on 1 July 2026. Dual citizenship is allowed — Denmark has allowed dual citizenship since 1 September 2015. Before this date, Danes acquiring foreign citizenship automatically lost Danish citizenship, and foreigners naturalising as Danish had to renounce their previous citizenship. Since 2015, both are possible simultaneously. If you acquired Danish citizenship or lost it before 2015, there may be a retroactive restoration option — check with the Ministry of Immigration. Important: your OTHER country may not allow dual citizenship — check with your home country's embassy. USA: generally allows dual citizenship. UK: allows dual. India, China, Japan: generally do NOT allow dual citizenship.
