👶 Childcare & Kindergarten

Vuggestue (nursery) DKK 2,000–4,500/month (after municipal subsidy). Full cost DKK 5,000–8,000/month. Maximum parent payment is capped by municipalities.

Subsidy available

Municipalities subsidise at least 75% of childcare costs. Low-income families may pay as little as DKK 0. Søskenderabat (sibling discount) of 50% for the cheapest placement.

Register via your municipality's pladsanvisning system (online). You will be offered a place when one becomes available. You can specify preferred institutions but must accept offers or lose your place in the queue.

⏱️ Apply via kommunal pladsanvisning (municipal childcare allocation) as early as possible — from birth or even before. Copenhagen has long waitlists. Sign up on day 1.

Dagpleje (childminder) Similar to vuggestue. Municipally subsidised.

Folkeskole (public school) Free

Folkeskolen

Ages: 6–16 years (classes 0–9, with optional class 10) · Language: Danish (with English from class 1 and German or French from class 5)

Children are automatically assigned to their local folkeskole (district school) based on home address. Contact the school directly or via your municipality. Children arriving without Danish will typically be placed in a modtagelsesklasse (reception class) for intensive Danish language acquisition before integration into regular classes.

Danish compulsory education (undervisningspligt) lasts 10 years (ages 6–16). The folkeskole is free for all children regardless of nationality. New arrivals are entitled to Danish language support. School day typically ends by 14:00–15:00 for younger children.

Gymnasium / Upper secondary Free

Gymnasiet (STX / HTX / HHX / HF)

Students apply through the coordinated gymnasium application system (gymnasieoptagelse.dk). Admission is based on grades from folkeskole year 9/10.

Denmark has several upper secondary pathways: STX (general, most common), HTX (technical), HHX (business), HF (higher preparatory examination — 2-year format). All lead to qualification for university admission. Vocational education (Erhvervsuddannelse / EUD) is an alternative to gymnasium with direct vocational training.

International Schools

Copenhagen has several well-regarded international schools, primarily in the northern suburbs. Main options: Copenhagen International School (CIS — IB, ages 3–18, DKK 100,000–180,000/year); Bernadotte School; French Embassy school; German school; American school. Some companies negotiate school fee packages for expat employees. International schools in Aarhus, Odense, and other cities are more limited. Many expat children in Denmark attend the public folkeskole — it integrates well, teaches good English, and is free.

University

Tuition fee

FREE for EU/EEA citizens (a unique Danish feature — Denmark offers free university education to all EU citizens at the same level as Danish students). Non-EU students pay tuition: approximately DKK 45,000–120,000/year depending on programme and institution.

Semester fee

No tuition for EU students. A small student union fee (studenterforeningskontingent) of DKK 200–500/year may apply. Main universities: University of Copenhagen (KU), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Copenhagen Business School (CBS), Aarhus University (AU), Aalborg University (AAU), University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Roskilde University (RUC).

Student visa

Non-EU students need a student residence permit from SIRI. Apply before leaving your home country. Valid for duration of studies plus 6 months for job-seeking.

Health insurance

EU students use their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or are entitled to register in the Danish healthcare system with a CPR number.

Application process

Apply through the coordinated admissions system (KOT — Koordineret Tilmelding) at optagelse.dk. Applications open 1 February, deadline 1 July for September start. Programmes with numerus fixus (limited admission) are competitive — admission based on grades.

Danskuddannelse (Danish language education)

Provider: Municipal language centres (kommunale sprogskoler), approved private language schools · Duration: Up to 3 years of language education (danskuddannelse), available in three tracks · Levels: Danskuddannelse 1 (DU1): for those with little or no formal education. DU2: for those with shorter formal education. DU3: for those with long formal education (typically expats with university degrees). Each track leads to Prøve i Dansk (PD) 1, 2, or 3.

FREE for most non-EU immigrants who are entitled to integration education. EU citizens may qualify for subsidised courses. Private courses: DKK 5,000–20,000.

The right to 3 years of free Danish language education is one of Denmark's most valuable offers for immigrants. Enrol through your municipality. The target for most educated expats is Prøve i Dansk 3 (PD3) at B2 level.

Studieskolen

Provider: Studieskolen (Copenhagen) · Duration: Semester-based modules · Levels: From complete beginner to C1/C2 level. Also offers culture and history courses.

DKK 3,000–8,000 per course module for non-subsidised students

One of Denmark's most respected private language schools. Very popular with expats. English-language support available. Evening and weekend classes available.

Babbel / Duolingo Danish

Provider: Online platforms · Duration: Self-paced · Levels: Beginner to intermediate

Duolingo: free. Babbel: DKK 70–150/month.

Danish pronunciation is notoriously difficult (the soft d, glottal stop/stød, and vowel sounds are challenging). Online tools are good for vocabulary and grammar but must be supplemented with speaking practice.
