💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens have the right to work freely in Denmark. They must register with SIRI within 3 months of arrival (EU registration certificate / registreringsbevis). No separate work permit is required. They must also register their address at the folkeregisteret and obtain a CPR number.

Non-EU Citizens

Non-EU/EEA nationals require a specific work and residence permit from SIRI. Main routes: Pay Limit Scheme (Beløbsordningen — job offer with salary above DKK 552,000/year in 2026 standard, DKK 446,000 supplementary scheme); Fast-Track Scheme (Hurtigsporet — employer must be SIRI-certified); Positive List (jobs in high-demand occupations); Researcher Scheme. EU Blue Card

Denmark has opted out of the EU Blue Card scheme and does not issue EU Blue Cards. The closest equivalent is Denmark's Pay Limit Scheme (Beløbsordningen), which requires a salary of DKK 552,000/year (standard) or DKK 446,000/year (supplementary) for 2026. This provides a work/residence permit for skilled non-EU workers.

Freelancer Visa

Denmark does not have a specific digital nomad or freelancer visa. Self-employed non-EU nationals need to demonstrate a viable business and adequate self-support. Contact SIRI for specific cases.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours 37 hours per week is the standard Danish working week set by most collective agreements. Work-life balance is taken extremely seriously — leaving on time (or early) is normal and expected. Overtime is the exception, not the rule, and is typically compensated with time off in lieu or extra pay.

Annual leave 25 days paid holiday per year (the minimum set by Ferieloven / the Holiday Act). Most collective agreements provide 30–32 days. The holiday year runs May–April. Note: holiday is earned in the previous year and taken in the current — new arrivals may have limited holiday entitlement in their first year. Feriepenge (holiday pay: 12.5% of salary) is paid out or accrued.

Sick leave Employees receive full salary from day 1 of sickness in most collective agreements (some pay minimum via sygedagpenge). No need to see a doctor for the first day in most workplaces. Employers may request a certificate (friattest/mulighedserklæring) if absence becomes frequent or long.

Trial period Prøvetid (probation): typically 3 months for new employees, during which either party can terminate with shorter notice (often 1 month). The period must be specified in the employment contract.

Notice period Opsigelsesvarsel (notice period) under Funktionærloven for white-collar employees: 1 month after 0–6 months service; 3 months after 6 months; up to 6 months after 5+ years. Blue-collar workers: set by collective agreements. Employees typically give 1 month notice.

Salary range Denmark has no statutory minimum wage — minimums are set by collective agreements (overenskomster). Typical minimums in agreements: DKK 135–165/hour (blue-collar); DKK 35,000–45,000/month (white-collar entry level). Senior roles: DKK 50,000–80,000+/month. Key sectors: pharma (Novo Nordisk, LEO Pharma), shipping (Maersk), wind energy (Vestas, Ørsted), IT, finance.

Pay frequency Monthly salary (månedlig løn) is standard for white-collar workers, paid at the end of the month. Blue-collar workers may be paid bi-weekly.

CV format: Danish CVs are typically 1–2 pages, clean and concise. Avoid flowery language — Danes appreciate directness and specificity. LinkedIn profile must mirror your CV.

Cover letter: Expected

Language: Danish language skills are increasingly important even in international companies. Many workplaces require at least basic Danish (A1–B1) for full integration. International companies (pharma, shipping, tech) often work in English. State your language levels clearly on your CV.

Interviews: Danish job interviews are conversational and relatively informal. Expect questions about your approach to teamwork, decision-making, and how you handle feedback. Emphasise collaborative skills and your respect for flat hierarchy. Be direct, specific, and honest. Multiple rounds (typically 2) are common. Salary negotiation: Danes discuss salary openly — research market rates and state your expectations clearly.
