Suomi.fi tunnistautuminen (Finnish digital identity)
Finland does not have a single national digital ID card as the primary authentication method (unlike Estonia's e-ID or Germany's nPA). Instead, Finnish digital authentication uses: (1) Pankkitunnukset — bank-issued online banking credentials from OP, Nordea, S-Pankki, Danske Bank, etc.; (2) Mobiilivarmenne — a mobile phone-based certificate from DNA, Elisa, or Telia; (3) HST-kortti — the Finnish government ID card with a chip (less commonly used). The Suomi.fi authentication gateway accepts all three methods to access any Finnish government service.
How to get it: Pankkitunnukset: obtained when opening a Finnish bank account. Mobile certificate (mobiilivarmenne): activate through your Finnish mobile operator (DNA, Elisa, Telia) — requires a Finnish phone number and national mobile subscription. HST-kortti: apply at DVV — requires HETU and personal appearance.
E-Government Portal
https://www.suomi.fiSuomi.fi is Finland's national government gateway. Unlike Denmark's e-Boks, Finnish official digital post via Suomi.fi Messages is opt-in (you choose to receive messages there) rather than mandatory — though uptake is growing rapidly. Government notifications increasingly arrive via Suomi.fi Messages. Activate Suomi.fi Messages at suomi.fi as soon as you have Finnish bank credentials or a mobile certificate.
