Payment Culture
Pakistan is predominantly cash-based, though mobile payments via JazzCash and Easypaisa are rapidly growing, especially in cities. Major hotels, restaurants, and shopping malls in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad accept credit/debit cards. Always carry adequate cash in smaller cities and rural areas. Raast (instant payment system) is used between bank accounts.
ATM Tips
ATMs are widely available in major cities. HBL, MCB, UBL, and Standard Chartered ATMs most reliably accept international cards. Inform your home bank before travel. Foreign card fees can be PKR 200–500 per withdrawal. ATMs can run out of cash on weekends and before holidays — plan ahead.
Exchange Tips
Exchange currency at licensed exchange companies (open-market rates are better than bank rates). Airport exchange rates are poor. Avoid informal exchangers to stay legal. Wise and international wire transfers are the most reliable for large amounts. The PKR is volatile — exchange in smaller amounts more frequently to manage rate risk.
