👶 Childcare & Kindergarten

Age: 6 months–5 years

No federal childcare subsidy scheme for private daycare. Provincial governments run some community-based early childhood programmes (e.g., under the BISP Ehsaas framework) for low-income families, but these are not accessible to expat families. Employer relocation packages for diplomatic and multinational staff often include childcare allowances — confirm with HR.

Visit in person to assess hygiene, security vetting of staff, generator power backup, and emergency procedures. Submit birth certificate, vaccination records (EPI card), parent/guardian IDs, and pay a registration deposit.

⏱️ In Islamabad (F-6, F-7, F-10, E-7 sectors), Lahore (Gulberg, DHA, Cantt), and Karachi (Clifton, Defence, PECHS), quality nurseries fill quickly. Apply 3–6 months ahead for infant slots. Cantonment/housing society restrictions on service providers may limit options.

Primary School (پرائمری اسکول)

Ages: 5–10 (Class 1–5) · Language: Urdu as primary medium in government schools; English as medium in many private schools

Government schools: register through the local education authority with birth certificate, B-Form (child ID), proof of address, and vaccination records. Foreign children require passport, valid visa, and a letter from the relevant embassy or consular office. Private schools have their own application and entrance assessment processes.

Government primary education is free. Most expat families choose private or international schools due to language, curriculum, and facility differences. Private English-medium schools (Beaconhouse, City School, Lahore Grammar School) are widely used. Islamabad Model Colleges and Cantonment Board schools are a middle ground.

Matric (SSC) / O Level / international secondary school Paid

Secondary School (ثانوی اسکول)

Ages: 11–17 (Class 6–12) · Language: Urdu or English depending on school type and curriculum

For Matric (government system): admissions test, prior school transcripts, and transfer certificate. For O/A Level private schools: entrance examination, academic records, and registration fee. Foreign transcripts require authentication (apostille/attestation) and may need IBCC equivalency certification for enrolment in the Pakistan system.

The secondary cycle runs Class 6–10 (Matric/SSC pathway) or O Level (Cambridge/Edexcel, Class 6–10/11). Classes 11–12 are F.Sc/FA (intermediate under boards) or A Level. O/A Level schools are common in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi and are the standard pathway for expat children and Pakistani elite families. Government secondary schools charge nominal fees. International schools offer IB Diploma as an alternative to A Level.

International Schools

Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi have established international schools serving the diplomatic and multinational community. Key schools include International School Islamabad (ISI — US curriculum with IB Diploma, Embassy Road), Lahore American School (US curriculum), Karachi American School (US curriculum), Froebel's International School (Cambridge IGCSE/A Level, multiple campuses), and The City School (Cambridge, national chain). Annual fees range from several thousand to over USD 25,000 per year. Budget separately for admission/registration fee, development fund, uniform, and transport. Security and access restrictions apply at embassy-affiliated schools. Apply well ahead — ISI and Lahore American School have waiting lists.

University

Tuition fee

Public universities (Quaid-i-Azam University, University of the Punjab, NUST, LUMS as a semi-public entity) have varied fee structures: government-aided programmes at QAU or Punjab University cost PKR 30,000–200,000/year; NUST charges PKR 200,000–600,000/year. Private universities (LUMS, Aga Khan University, IBA Karachi) range from PKR 400,000 to PKR 1,500,000+/year.

Semester fee

Institution and programme dependent. Private universities charge per-semester fees covering lab, library, technology, and student services in addition to tuition. Public university semester charges are minimal. No semester transport-ticket system exists.

Student visa

Foreign students must obtain a Pakistan student visa from a Pakistani embassy or consulate with an admission letter, proof of funds, medical certificate, and security clearance (coordinated by the university with the Ministry of Interior through HEC). Visas are issued annually and must be renewed alongside a security clearance renewal. Students may not work on a student visa without specific permission.

Health insurance

No comprehensive public student health scheme covers international students. Private insurance is strongly recommended. Aga Khan University Hospital, Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital (Lahore/Karachi/Peshawar), and CMH (Combined Military Hospital) facilities are the best available privately.

Application process

Apply directly to each university. Most undergraduate admissions require a university-specific entrance test (NUST NET, QAU entry test, LUMS SSE/SDSBT). Foreign students are typically exempted from the HEC Undergraduate Studies Admission Test (USAT). Foreign secondary credentials require IBCC (Inter-Board Committee of Chairmen) equivalency certification before admission. For postgraduate programmes, HEC HAT (Higher Education Commission Admission Test) is required for MS/MPhil/PhD from Fall 2026.
