Urdu is Pakistan's national language and is widely understood across all provinces alongside regional languages (Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi, Balochi). The Urdu script (Nastaliq, written right to left) is worth learning gradually — even recognising numbers and building names helps significantly. Expect 3–6 months of regular study to reach comfortable survival level; professional working proficiency takes 2–4 years of sustained effort. Note: Duolingo does not offer Urdu as of June 2026, though it may launch later in 2026. Pimsleur Urdu is verified available.

Language Levels — What Each Means
Survival. Greetings (Assalamu alaikum, Shukriya), numbers 1–100, directions, food words, market phrases, polite forms (Aap vs tum), basic emergency words.
Required for: Not legally required. Essential for taxi navigation, security checkpoint confidence, market transactions and basic domestic coordination.
Elementary. Can communicate with drivers, shopkeepers, landlords and domestic staff. Handles prices, negotiations, health symptoms and neighbourhood errands.
Required for: Not legally required. Practical 3–6 month target. Meaningful safety and comfort improvement in most Pakistani cities.
Threshold. Can participate in simple workplace conversations, handle government counter interactions with some difficulty, understand most conversations on familiar topics.
Required for: Not legally required. Expected standard for NGO field staff, local managers, factory supervisors and government liaison roles.
Upper intermediate. Can work in Urdu-medium settings, draft simple reports, understand TV news and engage in community meetings without consistent interpretation.
Required for: Not legally required. Practical threshold for senior local roles, long-term fieldwork and government engagement without an interpreter.
Advanced. Near-fluent spoken and written Urdu. Can negotiate contracts, read newspapers, lead meetings and handle complex official interactions.
Required for: Not legally required. Relevant for academics, senior development workers and long-term residents managing complex local operations.
Mastery. Near-native proficiency in spoken and formal written Urdu, including the Nastaliq script.
Required for: Not legally required. Relevant for translators, interpreters and academics writing or publishing in Urdu.
