Pakistan (PK)
Pakistan is South Asia's second-largest country and a land of extraordinary contrasts — from the towering Karakoram peaks in the north to the bustling port city of Karachi on the Arabian Sea.
Key Documents Checklist
Gather these before and after moving to Pakistan.
Required for visa, police registration, bank KYC, SIM registration, hotels, domestic flights and security checks. Keep a colour photocopy stored separately.
Correct visa category is essential; tourist status does not authorise employment. E-visas are available for many nationalities through the Pakistan Online Visa System (POVS).
Foreign employees need an employment visa and, typically, a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Board of Investment (BOI) or the relevant employer/sponsoring authority before working.
Required for work visa processing, payroll registration, FBR tax enrolment, bank account opening and housing or school applications.
National Tax Number (NTN) issued by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR); required for income tax filing, business registration and certain banking and property transactions.
Required for nationals of specified countries (as determined by the Ministry of Interior) at the local police station or Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) upon arrival. Rules vary by nationality, city and visa status; confirm requirements on arrival.

Required for work visa applications, regulated roles (medical, legal, engineering) and educational employment. Pakistan is NOT a member of the Hague Apostille Convention; documents must be attested through the standard chain: notarisation in the country of origin → home country Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation → Pakistani embassy/consulate attestation. Certified Urdu or English translation may be required.
Required for dependant visas, school enrolment, inheritance proceedings and family civil matters. Pakistan is NOT a Hague Apostille member; foreign documents require consular authentication: home country MOFA attestation followed by Pakistani embassy/consulate attestation. Certified translation into Urdu or English required for non-Urdu/non-English originals.
Foreign licences are recognised for short-term driving with a valid IDP. For longer-term residence, apply to the local National Transport Research Centre (NTRC)/provincial licensing authority to convert to a Pakistani driving licence. Most major cities have a licensing office; requirements vary by province.
Required for school enrolment, private health insurance underwriting, chronic medication management and some regulatory employment applications.
Required before importing dogs or cats; confirm current rules with the airline and the Department of Livestock and Dairy Development. Rabies vaccination certificate and health certificate from an accredited vet are standard requirements.
📜 What is an Apostille?
An apostille is an official certification that validates a document for international use. It is issued by a designated authority in the country where the document was issued (usually a court or government office). Required for documents from Hague Convention member states.
🌍 Certified Translations
Certified translations must be done by a sworn/authorised translator. In Pakistan, only translations by officially registered translators are accepted by government offices. Keep originals — they may be returned after verification.
